well i'm from the middle east so it was a huge issue (i don't how the coverage went outside the arab world)
anyhow this is an editorial written by me on the issue:
On March 1st, 2003, the Arab League convened its usual NORMAL session (annually), amidst threats of war on Iraq, and the zionist massacres on the Palestinians.
While people would expect this to be a crucial summit, in reality it wasn't.
Probably the shortest in its history, the Arabs, again, have not taken a clear and hard stand. Instead, the Libyans and the Saudis had a clash when Libyan leader Qaddafi accused the KSA (kingdom of saudi arabia) to be helping imperalists (U$A), and it led to the Saudi delegate to quit the summit, until he was talked down and he came back.
The UAE (united arab emirates) delegate suggested Saddam Hussien resign as president of Iraq. However, this call was never addressed later. It was ignored.
In the final statement, arabs said (just like the past) that they condemn all acts of war, and that palestinians must get there homeland.
Thats it. No real decisons. No plans of action. Again, the arabs fear their own interests (Hard Currency and U$ protection). This is mainly the Gulf nations, as the others are Socialist (at least superficially), but still don't make efforts to help their fellow arabs.
So what does this mean? Simple. Unless the Arabs unite (something they are not known for), and take a real stand against aggression, they can get things done. however, it doesn't seem that such nations even wish to unite.
until then, the war on iraq will happen, and more bloodshed back in jerusalem.
STOP U$ IMPERIALISM!
