There has been uproar in India's parliament over the cabinet's decision to open up the retail market to global supermarket chains.

One key government ally, the Trinamool Congress, joined opposition parties in shouting slogans and unfurling banners.

The lower house had to be adjourned, and Trade Minister Anand Sharma instead held a press conference to spell out details of the policy.

He said the "India-specific" scheme would create tens of millions of jobs.

The cabinet's move allows 51% foreign direct ownership (FDI) of multi-brand retail stores, allowing groups like Tesco and Wal-Mart to open stores. Such operators currently can only sell wholesale in India and not directly to customers.

Sound economic policy from the Indian government, lets destroy homegrown retailers by opening up the market to foreign behemoths.

Is it better to shield domestic firms from competition and thereby cause domestic indian consumers to suffer higher prices?

One does not necessarily lead to the other. what would be damaging is the flow of wealth out of communities and to a lesser degree out of nations, plus the multinational scale of the companies lends a greater degree of alienation between producers, suppliers, consumers.

Outsourcing jobs is job-creation. We have the likes of a Harvard School-graduate on Economics who suggested them. He is now CEO of a 2 billion dollar corporation in the Philippines. The fact that he was able to steer a multi-billion dollar company into a success bespeaks of his wisdom and wit. Free trade is 'non-computational' because of the anarchy of the market until you see the profits and benefits that accrue to your country. Look at free-trade proponent USA. She is the no. 1 superpower in the world.

why?

The outsourcing of jobs leads to greater labour competition thus driving down wages and benefits, the workers in India take these globalised jobs as part of a downward spiral of their own situation. These jobs provide services and products subject to a further degree of alienation from customers/consumers this alienation eroding further the nominal solidarity that exists in producer/consumer relations.

That is why we have to encourage domestic and foreign investments in Canada, USA, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Spain so that their remaining workers would be made to compete with their already saddled workers who will remain much in demand until the employer can no longer afford their wage proposals. India should be happy she was chosen to compete in the international market. How would one end up in India or Philippines nowadays. End up as maids and made a child factory of their husbands. Karl Marx annd the Left are to blame for all the woes of capitalism and socialism becausee they are not only ultimate evil but idiots as well.
