Witnesses and patients told reporters that the doctors on duty had fled the hospital almost immediately, leaving patients stuck in their wards and at the mercy of the billowing black smoke.

Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, summed up the mood when he sent this message on Twitter: “Every time I see incidents like #AMRI I’m convinced we really are a 3rd world nation with delusions of greatness.”

Ineptitude, poor equipment and bad information helped compound what initially seemed like a minor blaze.

My opinion on India and its people has lowered, if that is even possible :(

The blaze is sure to raise fresh questions about safety in India’s booming private hospital business, which, like much else in India, is poorly regulated.

Government regulation is socialism...

Apparently, socialism saves lives...

Hospital officials were slow to call the fire department

Local people who tried to get inside the hospital to help rescue patients said they were turned away by security guards who assured them it was only a small kitchen fire.

“the hospital fire control system was not in good shape” and that “the hospital staff was not trained in dealing with such situations and they did not have any experience of such situations.”

It just gets better and better since NN showed up................ :D

India has the potential to be a truly great and powerful nation. Almost everyone you will talk to admits that the process of transformation will not be overnight. Much like Italy before the Risorgimento and Garibaldi's expeditions to unify the country and expel the Austrians and the French, India is a nation with such a rich cultural, intellectual, and philosophic heritage that it deserves great power status and chances are not centuries, but millenia of inspirational thoughts and a rising mass of people will culminate in an eventually desirable outcome.

Anyway, the failure of the Indian government (in many cases, regional governments) has nothing to do with the bravery or cowardice of the Indian people. I'm uncertain why you insist on labeling Indians "cowards". They did manage to maul the Pakistani Army in almost all of their conflicts. Bangladesh has been split from Pakistan and a strong Hindu presence remains in Kashmir as a result of the heroism of Indian fighting men.
