This inflammatory cartoon published by a certain newspaper is of grave concern. A community of over a billion people has been slandered for no reason but their cultural differences. Those responsible for this outrage are deserving of punishment by relevant state authorities. There must be an apology given to the Muslim community.

About 2,500 people marched through downtown Oslo in a protest Friday against a Norwegian newspaper that printed a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

The demonstrators chanted "God is great" in Arabic and waved placards calling for a boycott of the Dagbladet daily.

On Feb. 3, the newspaper published a photograph showing a man in front of a computer screen with a depiction of Muhammad as a pig. The picture accompanied an article that said users were posting offensive material about Muslims and Jews on the Facebook page of Norway's security police.

Dagbladet's acting editor-in-chief, Lars Helle, told The Associated Press that he doesn't regret printing the offending image and that he welcomed Friday's protest.

"It was a test for Norwegian society — whether this would be a peaceful protest or not," Helle said.

He said Dagbladet has not received any direct threats since it published the caricature. A hacker attack originating from Turkey brought down the newspaper's Web site for two hours Wednesday evening, but Helle said it's unclear whether that attack was connected to the caricature.

Protesters said they wanted to show Norwegian media how hurtful such images are to Muslims. Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.

"We have done nothing to anybody. We want to live here in peace. Norway is our home. Our children live here. Why should they (Norwegian media) hurt us like this?" said Naradim Muhammad, a 43-year-old school teacher who helped organize the demonstration.

The demonstration was peaceful, except for a firecracker that was apparently thrown by a protester onto a restaurant patio. It caused burn damage to a patio sofa, but nobody was injured. After the blast, organizers ordered the crowd to disperse, encouraging them to go home or to a local mosque to pray.

Police spokesman Joern-Kristian Joergensen said the protest concluded without further incident. However, Oslo police, who maintained a low profile during the demonstration to avoid confrontation, would remain on alert throughout the evening, he said.

The intention of the article was to highlight the offensive nature of these online posts. It was not intended as an insult to Islam nor is it illegal for a Norwegian newspaper to publish images of Mohammad.

It is no different had the article been of child pornography on the internet and included a similar picture. The intent would not have been the promotion of child porn but to highlight the negative nature of it.

Had the article published offensive images of Jews eating babies, there would have been no protests and the entire issue would have been dropped. Instead, these protests highlight the immense overreaction by some muslims to a real news story.

"Norway's main Muslim associations had told their members not to take part in the protest."

That would have been the reasonable response to such a minor incident such as this.

Is the fuss over cartoons still going on... this really can only be seen as the muslim community still being pissed over the older Mohammed cartoons. Where is the Muslim outrage when Iranian state media runs cartoons that slander Jews? The overly sensitive reaction of the Muslim population displays the immature nature of Islam and Muslims.

I did a bit of diging to see if there was more news about this... and found....

Dagbladet, the Norwegian newspaper at the centre of the latest Mohammed cartoon tantrums (see below), was last night hit by a distributed denial of service attack which left the site offline for two and a half hours.

Turkish hacker group 1923TURK has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Mo-loving script kiddies explained:

Dagbladet’s attack against our prophet is disrespectful, Norwegians have no respect for anything. Therefore we attack the paper.

Dagbladet’s editor is unsympathetic:

If what they say is correct, it’s a terrible violation of publishing rights that any media should have.

According to the report, several other Norwegian sites have come under attack.

There are demonstrations planned for today. Islam in Europe has a good round-up of newspaper reports with quotes from various leading Muslims.

UPDATE: About 3,000 showed up, and the demo passed apparently without incident.

Mohyeldeen Mohammed, a spokesbeard for “The Volunteers” group which organised the demo, said:

If this will be allowed to continue in the end it will be too late. Then we’ll get a September 11th and a June 7th on Norwegian soil. This is not a threat, but a warning.

Well it seems the person who drew the cartoon has already been punished... see this article:

Islam in Europe reports an odd story brewing in Norway.

The country’s Police Security Service (a bit like MI5), has a Facebook page which allows comments and links from anyone who joins. One link led to a cartoon which depicted Mohammed as a pig writing the Koran. This led to the story being reported in the newspaper Dagbladet, accompanied by a shot of the image as it appeared on screen.

It was this reprinting of the image which then led to a protest by 1000 taxi drivers, who in a spontaneous demonstration of outrage, arranged to stop their cars between 2am and 4am in downtown Oslo. The demonstration passed peacefully.
However, liberal party MP Abid Q. Raja, a self-confessed moderate Muslim, has been making the usual dark noises. He has called on the PST heads and the justice minister to apologise for the original publication on Facebook. He said he was “afraid of the consequences” if they do not – but that he would very kindly try to calm down the community.

Think when this reaches the closed communities. Think when the mullahs see this. They’ll tear out their beards.

The original cartoon was drawn by a Jewish woman living in Hebron. She was sentenced by an Israeli court to two years in prison for trying to affix it to an Arab-owned shop front.

UPDATE (14:30) Oslo cabbies are continuing their protest today. One said:

We live in 2010 and we ought to expect that people had learned to show more respect. Why provoke such reactions when you know what happened after the caricatures in Denmark.

The newspaper Dagbladet tried patiently – but no doubt vainly – to explain in today’s editorial:

The drawing was used in a news report to illustrate that the Facebook profile of the PST (Police Security Service) contains links to Mohamed cartoons. Therefore it’s meaningless to claim – as the protesters do – that this is a provocation against Muslims in Norway and all over the world.

Sentenced to two years in jail for free speech. This Israelis are sure progressive. Maybe they could do a prisoner exchange for some Iranian homosexuals.

As for Norway.....a failure of their immigration policy it would appear.

Not at all a failure. A win on all sides. Except for the firecracker, it was a peaceful protest, and so Muslims showed their passion for their religion, while respecting everyone else. The newspaper excercised its right to free speech, even if unecessarily so.

This whole excercise resulted in positive outcomes.

Couldn't agree more. It just reeks of an overall insecurity.

Why should a government be careless of its citizens?

This I doubt. Unless you mean that Jews would do a lawsuit?

Jews protest antisemitic cartoon

Jews sue Family Guy for anti-semitic lyrics.

You are in a dream world if you believe that people are no longer pious and politically active.

Zyx, you Obviously do not understand the context of the original article.
There would have been no protests by any Jews in this case.
It's ignorant to suggest such.

I am correct in saying that had the image on the computer monitor had been that of a negative jewish stereotype in an article decrying the existance of a racist and hateful web posting, Jews would not have shown the slighest offence since the purpose of the article was to expose the racism, not to glorify it.

This is a legitimate newspaper exposing racism. They should be commended not condemned.

That question isn't really relevant, I would say.

Society does, however, tend to care that no group of individuals is disenfranchised from their rights and/or obligations.

That's protesting?
Shutting down the newspaper's servers isn't protest, but criminal activity. It's criminal belligerence perpetrated by Muslims taking offense without actually understanding the cartoon in the first place. The Muslims should apologize to the paper for being so intolerant that they can't even understand when someone is taking their side on something.

Oh please, Kapanda. The Cairo Declaration on Human Rights is evidence enough that Islam is completely incompatible with Western humanism. I have no problem with what they practice in their own countries, but they do not belong in Europe, nor do they seem to be mature enough to even handle living in a secular society with freedom of speech. Their protests at any assault on their religion go well beyond any reasonable action and certainly beyond what their Jewish and Christian peers engage in. It is a fundamental incompatibility, and it is time this was recognized.

It's a different religion. The Muslim's oppose showing the Muslim prophet. If the Jews opposed showing the Jewish prophet then the Jews would have protested. The Jews do not have such an opposition so they would not have protested. Good observation.

You misunderstand what the Muslims are protesting.

It's in the weblink. I merely put in google "Jews sue cartoon" and found that.
