And they are right, strictly speaking, that it can be considered damage to the body. And as you well know, Schaedigung (damage) is a much more neutral word than Verstuemmelung (mutilation). They don't use the word Verstuemmelung because it generally associated with grave harm and loss of functionality in one way or the other. Mutilation is used by people to elicit an exaggerated, emotional response which is obviously not the objective of responsible doctors.
