This story has been in the media over the last couple of days.

"Significant quantities" of children's remains have been found in what was probably a septic tank at a former Catholic orphanage in Ireland, government investigators reported Friday.

The Irish government created a commission to investigate sites around the former Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, County Galway, after a local historian found death certificates for 796 children but a burial record for only one child.

Suspicions of unrecorded and unmarked burials at the site in the west of the country have lingered for decades. The institution run by nuns was one of many "mother and baby" homes across the country where unmarried pregnant women were sent to give birth in an attempt to preserve the country's devout Catholic image.

The Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation reported that the remains were discovered in an underground structure that appears to have been "related to the treatment/containment of sewage."

Excavations have been carried out at the site in recent months but people who lived near the home said they have know about the unmarked mass grave for decades.

Two local boys reportedly unearthed the concrete-covered tank used by the home while playing in 1975 and found hundreds of children's bones inside. The tank has now been surrounded by a housing project.

“Up to now we had rumors. Now we have confirmation that the remains are there.”
A DNA analysis of selected remains found they belonged to individuals with age-at-death ranges from approximately 35 fetal weeks to three years, the commission said.

It added that radiocarbon dating of the samples recovered suggest that the remains date from the time the Mother and Baby Home which operated between 1925 and 1961.

The commission did not say how many children's remains were recovered or how many might still be buried.

Ireland's Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, said that the find was "very sad and disturbing news."

"It was not unexpected as there were claims about human remains on the site over the last number of years," she said in a statement posted on her ministry's website Friday.

"Up to now we had rumors. Now we have confirmation that the remains are there," Zappone added.

The Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation said it was "shocked by this discovery and is continuing its investigation into who was responsible for the disposal of human remains in this way."

The commission is also investigating 17 other church-run institutions.

Catholic institutions ran many of Ireland's social services in the 20th century, including mother-and-baby homes where tens of thousands of unmarried pregnant women, including rape victims, were sent to give birth. The revelations have sparked a round of soul-searching in the country, and triggered calls for accountability from government and Catholic Church officials.

This time period coincides with the TB epidemic that swept Ireland. Just wondering out loud if there is a connection? Everyone was trying to hide TB at the time as it was considered a poor person's disease and would have had societal consequences for the orphanage.

They have done tests on the remains and they mostly date back to the fifties.

A mass grave containing the remains of babies and children has been discovered at a former Catholic care home in Ireland where it has been alleged up to 800 died, government-appointed investigators said on Friday.

Excavations at the site of the former Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, County Galway, have uncovered an underground structure divided into 20 chambers containing “significant quantities of human remains”, the judge-led mother and baby homes commission said.

The commission said DNA analysis of selected remains revealed ages of the deceased ranged from 35 weeks to three years old. It found that the dead had been mostly buried in the 1950s, when the facility was one of more than a dozen in Ireland offering shelter to orphans, unmarried mothers and their children. The Tuam home closed in 1961.

The home, run by the Bon Secours Sisters, a Catholic religious order of nuns, received unmarried pregnant women to give birth. The women were separated from their children, who remained elsewhere in the home, raised by nuns, until they could be adopted.

The discovery confirms decades of suspicions that the vast majority of children who died at the home were interred on the site in unmarked graves, a common practice at such Catholic-run facilities amid high child mortality rates in early 20th-century Ireland.

The Irish government in 2014 formed the commission following the work of a local Tuam historian, Catherine Corless, who found death certificates for nearly 800 children who were residents at the facility but burial records for only two.

“Everything pointed to this area being a mass grave,” Corless previously told the Guardian. She recalled how boys playing in the field had reported seeing a pile of bones in a hidden underground chamber there in the mid-1970s.

The government’s commissioner for children, Katherine Zappone, said the findings were “sad and disturbing” and promised that the children’s families would be consulted on providing proper burials and other memorials.

“We will honour their memory and make sure that we take the right actions now to treat their remains appropriately,” Zappone said.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, Corless requested Galway county council’s records on the home from 1925 to 1961. She was refused.

But she was given documents from the 1970s, including an official map of the present-day estate the council built on the site.

“They obviously didn’t see the importance,” said Corless. “There is an area across the map marked ‘burial ground’,” she says. “First, the houses were built, around that area. Finally a playground was built on part of the burial ground itself.”

The mystery of the missing remains of the Tuam babies

Minutes from a Tuam council meeting call for “due care and sensitivity” when building the playground because of the “children’s burial ground and adjoining burial ground”, Corless said. “The playground is unnaturally big, it’s as big as the town playground.”

The story has been around for a couple of years. Locals knew it was a burial ground, but thought it dated to the famine of the mid 1800s.

It's absolutely heartbreaking what went on and still goes on in Ireland.

It mostly started since Ireland was granted so called independence in the early 1920s.

However, this story about '800 dead babies' also no longer exists, and is now 'a conspiracy theory', so building the case atop a non-existing story isn't doable. I'll have to look for the next one and try to make the same point on that one, when it comes.

It seems this is a true story. The original thread was not a flash in the pan. The crux of the discussion was a dig at Catholicism.

This seems to be a case of judging the past based upon today's morality. :(

It's seems that this orphanage had twice the mortality rate of other Irish orphanages in Ireland and died at four times the average Irish under 5′s death rate of the time.
A historian has been able to compile a complete list of the dead children which puts into perspective the enormity of what happened in this orphanage run by nuns. Many of the surviving children were sold to Americans for adoption..

THE REMAINS OF infants and toddlers lay for decades at the site at the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, unmarked, unvisited, unknown.
Investigators for the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Inquiry yesterday confirmed both that they had uncovered “a significant number” of those children’s remains – and that they dated back to the era during which the home was operational.
Very few pictures from the home exist but thanks to the tireless work of historian Catherine Corless, we do have the names of 796 children who died there between 1925 and 1960.
The infant mortality rate at the home was double that of even other mother and baby homes around the country at the time. Young children in the Tuam home succumbed to deaths from afflictions as heartbreakingly banal as the flu and, although only in a small number of cases, ear infections.
The most common causes of death were “debility from birth” (25%), 15% from “respiratory diseases”, 10% each from influenza and the measles, 8% born too premature to survive, 6% from whooping cough and in smaller numbers of epilepsy/convulsions, gastroenteritis, meningitis, congenital heart disease and congenital syphilis, skin diseases, chicken pox and one per cent – 10 children – of malnutrition.
As of yet, we do not know how many of these children are among the remains found but Corless supplied the names of all of the children, and their age when they died, to TheJournal.ie.
In lieu of an inscription of each child’s name on a physical memorial, we publish them all here today.
