MistyTiger wrote:Well looks like Putin is dumping Trump. Putin asked the UN to investigate the reasons why Syria was attacked. It would seem that he wants the US to face a reprimand or some sort of punishment. How fickle he is!

Trump have alot of pressure from his advisers and the congress. the recent attack on Syrian base was a joke because the US warned Russia who than warned Syria. and eventually the only damage that was done was a few destroyed aircraft that were already broken and not ready for use.

but removing Assad is still a priority because Russian Iranian presence in Syria is harmful to the US interests

Assad must be removed.

This explains the real reason for the Syrian civil war

We removed Saddam but things did not go as planned. Why should removing Assad work out any better?

Beren wrote:It was Trump who dumped Putin first, not that Putin ever trusted him. Now Trump wants to deal with him from a position of power and dominate him. Unlike Trump Putin is pretty predictable and nobody should expect him to take this kind of treatment kindly.

Ah ok, then Trump is not that broken up about it. Putin is definitely someone you do not want to challenge.

I'm not sure whether Trump wanted this, but it could be expected that they would collide. I also didn't expect Trump to be careful with using military force, it didn't take him a hundred days to seem like a war hawk.

Well, there is that plus an aircraft carrier steaming towards the Korean peninsula and Trump saying he will take care of North Korea by himself if China does not assist.

I think President Trump is calling the bluff of the little fat guy.

It was a stunt.

Empty buildings were damaged, notthe runway or anything critical.

Airstrike carried out so it wouldn’t hurt Russia’s long-term plans in Syria: US military official

They intentionally made it a non-strike to the point of useless. A fireworks show, nothing more. The airfield is fully operational. If Trump were serious he would have attacked Syrian military HQ &/or assassinate Assad. He din't, because he isn't serious. Just as there is no broader strategy on Syria. Like the non-plan Trump claimed in the election campaign he has to defeat ISIS.

Of course he's not serious about a full out attack on the Syrian military/regime, at least not yet.

As for the damage:

Mr Mattis said the "measured response" by the US had "resulted in the damage or destruction of fuel and ammunition sites, air defence capabilities and 20% of Syria's operational aircraft".

If that is correct it was not a stunt. Sounds a lot more serious than a damaged runway.

President Trump: 'We Are Not Going Into Syria'

President Donald Trump said the United States will not go "into Syria," implying he has no intention of declaring a full-scale war against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad after attacking a Syrian base on Thursday.

"We are not going into Syria. But when I see people using horrible, horrible chemical weapons which they agreed not to use under the Obama administration, but they violated it..." the president said in an interview scheduled to air in full during the Fox Business Network's Mornings with Maria on Wednesday morning.

This final decision was as expected and as it should be.

20% of Syria's operational aircraft

Those were deadbeat aircraft the Syrians left behind because they were not worth saving, about to be decommissioned. It was no 'victory' of any kind. And only a minority of missiles hit. Pathetic.

Sure they were, in fact the entire airbase was decommissioned hours before the air strike. Stupid Americans!

With retrospect, after thinking about this for a while... there was no proof Assad did the chemical attacks. I think he is more than capable of it, but there was just no evidence to warrant an attack on Syria at the time it happened. W presented blatant lies, but at least he bothered to present something. Trump is just dangerous. He feels answerable to no one and will completely change his position overnight with no warning, discussion, or thought, because it is what he wants. Usually over a nice slice of cake.
