The incident began around 4pm local time in Australia (7am UK time) when police and fire crew rushed to reports of an explosion at a building in Bay Street, Brighton.

Two people have died and three police officers have been injured after a gunman with a hostage called a TV news station in Melbourne claiming to be a member of ISIS.

Video shot by a bystander captured the moment a 'hail' of gunfire erupted after police tried to negotiate with a man who had taken a woman hostage.

Some witnesses are suggesting that around 30-40 shots were fired in the shootout.

The gunman is understood to have been one of the men killed alongside a second unnamed man believed to work at the apartments - while police managed to rescue the woman.

9News is reporting that police are investigating possible links to terrorism - after reports he had called a TV newsroom of Channel Seven saying: "This is for IS, this is for al-Qaeda."

A woman is said to have been heard screaming in the background during the phonecall.

I wonder if our media and politicians will ever be able to unravel the mysterious motives of the attacker. :?: A puzzle wrapped in an enigma.

Authorities have identified the attacker as a Somali-born man, Yacqub Khayre, 29, who lived with his mother in a Melbourne suburb. Police are now searching the mother's house.

Khayre was on parole after serving time in prison for a violent burglary in 2012, Ashton said. According to Australian media, he was also known to counter-terrorism authorities for his alleged involvement in a 2009 terror plot to attack the army barracks in Sydney.

That's as funny as the one assuming all Americans can be traced back to the Mayflower.

Yacqub Khayre was out on parole for other violent offences at the time of the attack and this incident proves that violent offenders need to be imprisoned as long as possible. I don't know if Khayre was a committed jihadist or a repeat offender bound to harm innocent people once he's out on the street.

A refugee in 1991, he had been put in youth detention as a teen and was an inmate on remand accused of being a terrorist by 2009.

He would be acquitted in 2010 of terrorism charges, but two years later was back inside, this time at Port Phillip Prison. It was there he gained the reputation while housed in the Fishburn unit for his behaviour.

Convicted over a brutal Dallas aggravated burglary in 2012, Khayre showed no remorse for his crimes, some that would leave mental scars on his victims.
