I don't think CNN has any idea how pathetic it has made itself look over this whole episode. First they came out with their ridiculous response to Trump's original tweet - even they can't possibly believe their line about it "inciting violence" - and now they're bragging about chasing down and blackmailing some random guy on Reddit for making a sloppy pretend gif about them. Do they honestly have nothing better to do? :eh:

CNN is so stupid at this point that they are making Trump look like some Machiavellian genius.

The Sabbaticus wrote:Their move triggered an avalanche of gifs featuring their logo. CNN is all over the alternative news circuit, social media and beyond. "No such thing as bad publicity." As they say. Or something in that direction.

Yeah I'm looking up the gifs now. Their brand is about to become associated with terrorism and tyranny.

Trump has a symbiotic relationship with the media. It's just that the alt-right dimwits don't realize it and play along like the perfect tools they are.

Um, excuse me, I'm not actually from the US. Could someone explain to me what's going on? I just saw the title and I was like "WTF is with an american news site issuing a fatwa? Did they become Islamic or something? And how to you issue a fatwa against? Does CNN even know what fatwa is?"

This tweet is one of the best finds of this week. The user apologized for calls for violence against the press in his statement. "The meme was created purely as satire, it was not meant to be a call to violence against CNN or any other news affiliation," he wrote. "I had no idea anyone would take it and put sound to it and then have it put up on the President's Twitter feed. It was a prank, nothing more. What the President's feed showed was not the original post that was posted here, but loaded up somewhere else and sound added to it then sent out on Twitter. I thought it was the original post that was made and that is why I took credit for it. I have the highest respect for the journalist community and they put their lives on the line every day with the jobs that they do in reporting the news."

Can you please explain to me what's going on? I'm not from the US or the West so I don't know what's so bad about this.

Many years ago, Donald Trump appeared on WWE. WWE is a "sports entertainment" company. They do wrestling (not Roman-Greco, it's like Mexican Lucha Libre). It's fake and scripted. Many years ago Donald Trump made an appearance where he "beats" someone up. He clothes lines him to the ground, and punches him in the face a few times. Haha good times and all that. However, just recently, some right winger made a GIF with this video, that shows a CNN logo over the guy's head. It makes Trtump look like he's clothes lining and beating up CNN. People do shit like this all the time, but what's different is that Trump himself retweeted it.

CNN got offended saying that Trump is calling for violence against American media, etc. etc. Lots of people in the media are angry about it. CNN found out who the guy was that create the GIF and demanded an apology with the threat to Dox him (make his home address and contact info public so people can harass him) if he didn't apologize. The guy apologized openly to CNN, and thus CNN didn't Dox him.

This guy is a total asshole and a creep, don't get me wrong. He has posted all sorts of worst racist shit. Still though, a professional organization like CNN, should not be engaging in Doxing and blackmailing people. That is pretty fucking low.

@Rancid

So it's another one of those situations. You see this stuff everywhere, there's nothing news worthy about it other than that Trump is in it. You see this stuff in the Middle East all the time.

Also what's with the "fatwa" thing then? That's the thing that drew me to this topic in the first place. I seldom report on anything that isn't either related to the Middle East, general political science, or Iranian political discourse.

It's a joke.

This reminds me of when they doxxed the guy who came up with the Obama-Socialist poster. Obviously, that didn't do much good. However, CNN is a corporation, and they could be held liable if they aren't very specific about what they say about a particular individual. You can't just call someone a "racist" and not define what you mean, because people can understandably arrive at completely different conclusions.

Anyway, it's obvious that the O'Keefe thing has gotten under their skin.

It is surprising that they have been so inept at responding. As Stefan Molyneaux pointed out, they could have easily put their own logo on the face of the guy who dropkicked Pres. Trump while on their show...

Instead? They really just are interested in digging their own grave.

They do not call them the "dinosaur media" for nothing. They are hopelessly out of touch.

Reserving the right to publish an individuals name is a dangerous thing to support a large organization doing. Especially when it's about a meme he created which wouldn't matter at all except that someone very powerful and stupid retweeted it.

Of course, as is the way of things, the reporter immediately started receiving death threats and the names of his family members got circulated. Which also is not okay.
