U.N. Watchdog: Syrian Government Responsible For April Sarin Gas Attack

A U.N. watchdog agency is blaming the Syrian government for a sarin gas attack on a rebel-held area of the country that killed more than 90 people in April.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which confirmed in June that the agent used sarin, now says it is sure that the attack in Khan Sheikhoun in the northern province of Idlib was carried out by the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Linda Fasulo, reporting for NPR from the United Nations, says the OPCW conclusion "coincides with initial findings by Washington in April, which resulted in a retaliatory U.S. missile strike against a Syrian airbase."

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in a statement that the report "confirms what we have long known to be true. Time and again, we see independent confirmation of chemical weapons use by the Assad regime."

As NPR's Merrit Kennedy wrote in June:

"The April 4 airstrike killed scores of people, and experts immediately pointed to the possibility of sarin. Sarin is more lethal than chlorine gas, which has been documented numerous times in Syria.

... The day after the attack, Doctors Without Borders said it had examined eight patients who "showed symptoms – including constricted pupils, muscle spasms and involuntary defecation – which are consistent with exposure to a neurotoxic agent such as sarin gas or similar compounds."

Shortly after the attack, U.S. officials rejected a claim by Russia, which is an ally of the Syrian government, that "a conventional weapons strike by the Assad regime accidentally hit a stockpile of chemical weapons that belonged to rebels or terrorists."

How does this make any sense? Can they give an explanation why chemical weapons were used on a non-military target, within city limits, in the middle of the road, with an unguided weapon, when Assad is winning heavily.

Rogue military commander?

It makes no sense for Assad to be involved in the use of chemical weapons in Syria. The momentum has been shifting in the favor of the Syrian government for some time, and even when things looked worse, using chemical weapons would have given America and its Western allies a literal green light to up the scale of their support for terrorists in Syria and to attack Syrian forces more directly than they ever have.

There's absolutely no reason Assad would do anything like this. Either this is a rogue military commander or one of many terrorist organizations in Syria trying, yet again, to make it look like an attack by government forces.

For the record, I do not necessarily believe the articles I forward, I put them where I think they belong as events.

We are unlikely to ever know what really happened. Could have been the ground crew were about to load up the jets with another bomb load only to discover they had run out of high explosive bombs. So some bright spark wheels out some rusty old bombs from the back of the ammo dump, without bothering to check what the code on them means, and says “hey, I found some more bombs. Load’em up”.

To understand Syria you need to understand three things:

1 Islam is awful. Everyone hates Muslims except westerners. Take your poor Muslim stories to Burma, South Sudan or the Central African Republic and see how far you get. Even Muslims hate Muslims, Muslims don't need western or Zionist agents or interventions in order to murder each other. Muslims are virtually incapable of sustaining democracy. Muslims have never created stability. Muslim regimes have been constantly involved in internal and external conflict. The same could be said for Medieval Christianity, but no modern Christians are not trying to create the Medieval Papacy or Bourbon absolutism. Lots and lots of Muslims want to re-establish the Caliphate.

2 Jewish supremacists run western foreign policy.

3 Israel doesn't exactly know what it wants in Syria. It doesn't want a powerful Assad, but it wants a unified Sunni Arab regime even less.

The last time a government gassed "its own people" it was an arab nationalist regime of particular type, ba'athist, and the people that it gassed were not really "it's own people" but those of a different and rebellious ethnicity to that of the ruling clique and it happened in the midst of a war. If anyone hasn't guessed it was Saddam's government's use of chemical weapons against kurds during the Iran-Iraq war.

So this situation is more or less a completely identical situation to that of Saddam and the gassed kurds and yet loads of people can't believe it.

Yes its very similar, both attacks were perpetrated by Sunni Arabs and in both case the Americans tried to frame up the Shia for it. In both wars the Zionists wanted neither side to win. In both the Zionists tried to perpetrate these bloody wars. But in both the wars created too much instability, so in both America and its Jew worshipping allies had reluctantly to allow the war to come to an end.

Assad and his ruling clique are Alawite that's a sub-sect of shia. I don't think zionism has anything to do with this.

Have you heard of The Yinon Plan? Are you aware that Israel already ethnically-cleansed 80,000 Syrians from Syrian territory in the Golan Heights and has been militarily occupying it for decades? Are you aware Israel has no official borders because it's an expansionist state? :|

Israel has been medically treating mercenaries in Syria to fight the Syrian army. It has repeatedly attacked Syria with its airforce and army. But yeah, zionism has nothing to do with this and let me tell you how by calling you an anti-semite...as if that fucking works at all as an argument.

Back on topic:

Theodore Postol, a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and former scientist with the U.S Department of Defense. In a 14-page report, Postol debunks the White House’s report that concluded Assad was behind the attacks. Postol’s report found that the U.S. and supporting governments have not provided any “concrete” evidence to black up their claims. Postol also says that it increasingly likely that the attack was carried out by rebel forces.

“The implication of Postol’s analysis is that it was carried out by anti-government insurgents as Khan Sheikhoun is in militant-controlled territory of Syria,” reports the International Business Times. Postol writes that he has reviewed the White House document and came to the conclusion “that the document does not provide any evidence whatsoever that the US government has concrete knowledge that the government of Syria was the source of the chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun, Syria at roughly 6 am to 7 am on April, 4th 2017.”
