Sweet yeah! Can't wait to see the return on live TV!

Now Mr "we've been there already" Obama has been retired, the moon is back in the picture. Another President George Bush Jr promise that President Donald Trump looks set to deliver.

We are finally going to see more Americans going back to the Moon after too long a wait. The moon is going to feature in the Mars mission too. Obama's legacy looks set to be totally trashed. Now he looks like "the one that got in NASA's way".

Funily enough, the Obama-era plan was to have a manned visit to an asteroid, which was if anything, more ambitious than going to the moon. Of course the Tea Party lot gutted the NASA budget fot no reason, and it went nowhere. But sure, somehow this is all Obama's fault, and Trump will bigly MAGA.

That said, I'm all for space exploration, so let's hope this is more than an empty gesture.

:O This news is about as exciting as someone announcing that we've "Discovered the New World!", or ""We climbed Everest!".

FFS people, we were there 40 years ago! Trump's living in the past like the dopey cunt that he is!

I think Trump is imitating President Reagan to make America great again. It was a shame that America no longer had an active space program after previous administrations cut back on NASA funding. President Trump signed a $19.5 billion bill earlier this year to fund NASA programs, which was close to an all-time low, but NASA is likely to get more under the new presidential directive.

Yeah 40 years ago... time to go back before the Chinese and Russian (who have active moon mission programs) or some private group like Space X get up there and steal the flag.

This ain't the past dumbasses, the space race is back in full swing. America is the hare, Russia and China are the tortoise.

yeeHAW, motherfuckers! We're not putting $2 trillion into energy tech over the next 3 years, we're not creating one million climate jobs, we're going back to the Moon for photo opps! Suck it bitches

Who said photo op? This is about beating the Russians and Chinese, and those rinky dink Space X guys, as it always has been.

All the competition is moon focused at the moment. Makes sense to get back first before the crowd wrecks it.

Is there some kind of competition for most idiotic post of the day going on that I've been missing?

Obama ended Constellation, which was a hugely expensive disaster that went nowhere. Obama didn't succeed entirely with cutting the pork though, since SLS/Orion kept being funded by Congress. $20bn later NASA has a rocket and a capsule, something that could have been provided by "commercial space" in a fixed price competition for far less, but no payloads, that is landers, in-space stages, habitats etc. It remains to be seen whether Trump can convince Congress to fund it. Given NASA's current expenses for ISS and SLS/Orion, it will likely take 10+ years for astronauts to land on the Moon, if it will happen at all.

They're going to do that with all the extra money he's pumping into NASA, right? Do the thing we did 40 years ago? Brilliant. It's living in the past.

No one steals the flag. Dumbasses might think so. America does not have a claim to the Moon. You have to live there to do that.

Now a race to Mars. Well, that would seem far more logical.

China and Russia both have active moon progams, Space X and Virgin Galactic have signaled intention to develop moon services particularly Musk's group.

America has to keep up. You're actually behind in the mission to land another person on the Moon. Even behind the privateers....

You talk like that person who thinks we're going to put a man on top of Everest... again.

It's not a big deal for the USA to put a man on the moon, regardless of who else might succeed 40 years after the fact.

Moon. Been there. Done that.

Do something new.

They are. NASA's new Moon Mission is a "sub-mission" to the manned spaceflight mission to Mars. That's why NASA officially supports(they've pushed for this for years, democrat shortsighted idiots blocked it) returning to the moon and using the moon both for training purposes for landing on Mars and to build a larger Mars spacecraft that will not have to take off from earth.

But OK its too "retro" for you to comprehend. Everest is Mars, Kilimanjaro is the moon.... conquer one(the smaller one), train on it, then try and get to the top of the other one.

Godstud wrote:@colliric Now you're just being a condescending asshole. My point is valid.

My point is also valid. We both have valid point. If you think NASA doesn't want to do this and have "good reason to", then you are not correct.
