I think you are being simplistic, the western bloc was dominated by many colonialist and imperialist powers, socialism was big in Indian political circles at this time, Stalin had great relations with a whole spread of Indian politicians including PM Nehru, India had bad relations with China due to border conflicts and Nixon made peace with China over-and-against the Soviet Union which probably helped to push India into Russia's arms.

I don't disagree that fear was a factor, but there was a definite ideological motivation that you are attempting to preclude here which seems a bit dishonest.

India had a distinct and clear bitterness against the British Empire and had solidarity with other post-colonial states against many of the nations that were in the fold of NATO and the western powers. Likewise, that socialism had any popularity in such a post-colonial nation is analogous to the same phenomena in many African and East Asian states as well that had been liberated from colonial rule in the 20th century and likewise supported the Soviet Union (such as Vietnam to name one).

The only one being simplistic here is you, "India was in soviet block that's why USA chose Pakistan", you couldn't be more simplistic and more wrong, while ignoring the entire subcontinental historical context and reality. As I said India was literally begging to be part of western bloc, it was only in late 60s that she started drifting towards USSR more and more firmly finally culminating in a 20 year friendship treaty in 1971..

Ideologically is fine and dandy but ground reality is far more important, you completely failed to address my actual real life examples like why US would be hostile towards India, see the Goa example again which happened in 1961 10 years prior to Indo-USSR friendship treaty.

Finally plz don't exaggerate Nehru's fondness for Stalin, Nehru at the end of the day was no communist, he instantly dismissed the first communist government in India that got elected in Kerala in 1957 (iirc), if anything he would had been a great ally in west's anti communist crusade as I said rather than simplistic "us vs them" try learning some political history of the region. :)

How the west managed to choose Pakistan as an ally, rather than India, is a mystery to me.

Probably because India after independent (and partition) was "non aligned" that is sympathetic to the Soviet camp, so the Americans had to chose the other part of the "partition". But the Pakistanis seem always so hostile to the West. It's really strange.
