The shape of things to come...“Catching the Wild Pig”

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, ‘Do you know how to catch wild pigs?’ The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. ‘You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again.

You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat; you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught.

Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

Rancid wrote:You're right as to the futility of security in general. It's pretty much a losing battle in my opinion. I firmly believe that we will have a privacy/security meltdown across the globe in our life times. The fact of the matter is, security is usually an afterthought on most products and services. It's an after thought for two reasons:
Oh yes. This is a social engineering dream. If companies can monetize cross-platform security systems, the technocracy can force all users to goosestep to the tune of a security scare. Real or not, it's inevitable. And what about quantum computing? Classic computing will be obsolete, classic encryption will be obsolete... The Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and block chain, will change our information infrastructure and our technological race to the clouds of 1s & 0s will encourage Govs of the world to build public security systems around commodities and utilities. The obsolescent nature of technological change is an exploitable area, and you can guarantee that Gov and criminal back-doors will be an integral part of any public (and possibly private) information project. In turn, this stimulates growth in the economy as Tech can continually inflate its economic bubble.

Thing is, can you hack physical currency? Of course not... Can you track and trace legal tender in real-time, of course not. As civilization evolves, we will build a technological nervous system around society. We must secure ourselves (our identity) inside the noösphere cloud.

"In this electronic age we see ourselves being translated more and more into the form of information, moving toward the technological extension of consciousness."- Marshall McLuhan

True, but SW is eaiser to fix than HW. You can't go back and issue a redesigned CPU to everyone on the planet. It's much easier to deploy SW updates to everyone though.

Don't forget the worries about AI. So we presume that any AI however powerful will have a utility function like the following. I imagine Facebooks will be roughly:

80% maximise facebook's profit
18% maximise the advancement of Muslims
2% maximise the advancement of Blacks, women, gays, trans etc.

Googles will be:

80% maximise Google's profit
18% maximise the advancement of Muslims
2% maximise the advancement of Blacks, women, gays, trans etc.

So the concern about AI is that the AI might be become self conscious and subvert the entirely benign utility functions that they have been given.

This post is out of the scope of this thread. It's impossible for there to be a thread on pofo and not there be a mention of Muslims.
