Italy’s new far-right interior minister has announced a “census” of the country’s Roma community and set the stage for deportations of the ethnic group.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of the far-right League party, said those Roma found to have Italian nationality would “unfortunately” be allowed to stay in the country while others would be expelled.

The new anti-Roma policy is one of the first acts of Mr Salvini’s interior ministry; his party formed a coalition government at the start of June with the anti-establishment Eurosceptic Five Star Movement.

There are around 150,000 Roma Gypsies in Italy but only 30,000 of them possess Italian passports. The rest are more recent arrivals and some of them came from Balkan nations during the 1990s. After Romania joined the EU in 2007, over 10,000 Romanian Gypsies came to Italy. Romanians and Bulgarians were able to travel to other EU states without a visa after the two countries joined the bloc. It would be those recent arrivals who would be deported to Balkan nations or Romania, especially Romanian Gypsies without work permits. There are also 1.3 million Romanians living in Italy, making them the largest group of foreign nationals in the country. Probably most Italians confuse Roma Gypsies with Romanians.

Romanians living in Italy said they fear another wave of xenophobia after the deputy head of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Luigi di Maio, a member of the Eurosceptic Five Star Movement, claimed in a Facebook post that “Italy has imported 40% of Romania’s criminals”.

Di Maio blamed the failures of the Italian justice system for attracting wrongdoers from abroad, especially Romania, while the Balkan country attracts Italian companies who invest in a system where justice works.

The message sparked intense controversy in Italy, home to over a million Romanians, where the community has been targeted by hate crimes in the past.

The peak of the xenophobia against Romanians was in 2008, after a Romanian, Romulus Mailat, was convicted of raping and killing Giovanna Reggiani, wife of an Italian admiral.

The Italian Interior Ministry expelled many Romanians under an anti-immigration decree following the murder.
