The Trumpists are pathetic. The meeting with Juncker shows just how weak Trump really is. All Juncker did was a bit of cheek kissing, right and left, and dangle some meager carrots in front of Trumps nose.
The EU Commission doesn't buy soybeans or LNG. All Junckers said was that the EU would try to build more LNG terminals, which is meaningless because current terminals are only used at about 30% of capacity. Moreover, Russian LNG will always be cheaper than US LNG. There are zero tariffs on LNG, so the EU can't reduce taxes on US LNG.
Regarding agriculture goods, there is zero chance that the EU will import US GMOs or that the EU will scrap CAP.
That Trump celebrates this as a victory shows just how much pressure he is under both at home and abroad. He shot himself in the foot with his trade war, which makes Brexit look like a resounding success. The Trumpists are clutching at straws. The EU should go in for the kill and demand that Trump remove tariff on steel and aluminium and excludes car tariffs.
The EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom is already preparing a list of US goods to impose counter tariffs worth 20 bln in case Trump goes ahead with the car tariffs. Vestager will put more fines on US multinationals and Macron is preparing a digital tax that will hit US multinationals.
If the US wants a trade deal, we first have to talk about non-tariff barriers like the buy American act for public procurement in the US. Tariffs are negligible. Even with zero tariffs, nobody in Europe will buy US cars.
Juncker was in Washington to explain to Trump that he is wrong about trade. Juncker had no mandate to make any trade deal whatsoever. That Trump made this look like a great deal is utterly pathetic and shows just how needy he is for a PR success. Trump will gamble away the US's strategic interests to get a few good articles in the media. That's exactly the president the empire deserves. Trump is god's curse on the empire.
And in case anybody thinks that Trump is winning against China, think again. Congress just approved a bill to remove tariffs on more than 1,000 Chinese products. Kim isn't going to give up his nukes and Trump's sanctions against Iran aren't going to be as effective as Obama's sanctions. Putin isn't going to give on Ukraine or Syria either. Trump is a most pathetic loser of all times. It's failure all around.
