Coronavirus Racism: Chinese City Bans Black People from Hotels, Apartments, Restaurants

The vast majority of Chinese coronavirus cases in Guangzhou are Chinese nationals.

Despite this, many Chinese in Guangzhou are blaming Africans from the Chinese virus. Multiple outlets, citing locals in Guangzhou, reported that the government has begun arbitrary Chinese coronavirus testing of black people and ordered restaurants and other service businesses not to serve black people.

That's novel--scapegoating black people for something that clearly isn't there fault. Gotta love those commies!

“I’ve been sleeping under the bridge for four days with no food to eat … I cannot buy food anywhere, no shops or restaurants will serve me,” Tony Mathias, an Ugandan student, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) in an article published Saturday. “We’re like beggars on the street.”

Kenya has seen perhaps the most outrageous incidents of Chinese racism on the continent. In 2018, Kenyan workers on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a BRI project, revealed that Chinese workers had established an “apartheid” system on work sites. Africans were not allowed on the same transport vehicles, in the same cafeterias, or otherwise near their Chinese counterparts. Despite being educated in engineering and construction, the Chinese allowed Kenyans only poorly paid manual labor jobs.

Chinese racism toward blacks has been known about for years. It happens in India also. I can report the same in Indonesia. Just poke around other Asian countries to find some more.

Noticeable connection between China and African countries were established no until the Cold War during which Pro-communism African countries sent exchange students to China for further education. Racism in China has its roots in stereotypes of Africans.

Pan Qinglin, a member of China’s Political Consultative Conference, claimed that “Africans have a high rate of AIDS and the Ebola virus.” Pan further suggested that China will change from a “yellow country” to a “yellow and black country” if black communities continue to exist in China.

No doubt there is a polemical element to Trump’s timing of criticism of China’s racism. But who cares? He is a very bad and very orange man. We all know that.


What is more concerning is the abject failure of morally upstanding, righteous avante guard progressives to challenge racism right before their eyes. One must wonder why they are applying universal standards of respect for human dignity in one country but not in another. It is like they don’t mean what they say and that opposing racism in America is just a cynical exercise in securing political dominance over their opponents.


Surely this cannot be so. I would be able to dismiss this worrying thought if only I were to see our noble progressives taking firm and sustained action in opposing racism in China.

Out of a total of 4,553 African people in the city, 111 Africans in China’s southern city of Guangzhou tested positive for the novel coronavirus. This is why foreigners of African appearance in Guangzhou were being subjected to forceful testing for the coronavirus and quarantines. Africans need to cooperate with Chinese authorities.

A major Chinese news outlet, the Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday that as of Monday, April 14, over 100 Africans in China’s southern city of Guangzhou had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Xinhua quoted Chen Zhiying, executive vice mayor of Guangzhou, as saying of the 111 confirmed cases, 19 were imported.

The vice mayor also confirmed that a total of 4,553 African people in the city had undergone nucleic acid testing since April 4. Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province had made news headlines after a number of Africans were evicted from their places of lodging amid reports of racist abuse related to coronavirus.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday admitted receipt of complaints by African governments that foreigners of African appearance in the city of Guangzhou were being subjected to forceful testing for the coronavirus, quarantines and ill treatment. U.S. diplomats also reported that African-Americans had been targeted.

The statement read in part: “During our fight against the coronavirus, the Chinese government has been attaching great importance to the life and health of foreign nationals in China. All foreigners are treated equally. We reject differential treatment, and we have zero tolerance for discrimination.

“Since the outbreak, the authorities in Guangdong attach high importance to the treatment of foreign patients, including African nationals. Specific plans and proper arrangements are made to protect their life and health to the best of our ability, thanks to which we were able to save the lives of some African patients in severe or critical conditions.

It added: “The foreign ministry will stay in close communication with the Guangdong authorities and continue responding to the African side’s reasonable concerns and legitimate appeals.

“The virus knows no borders. The pandemic, a challenge to all mankind, can only be defeated through concerted international efforts. With mutual understanding, mutual support and cooperation, we are ready to continue working with African friends to achieve the final victory.”

China Rejects US Accusation of ‘Xenophobia’ Against Africans
China’s government refuted Monday the United States accusation that authorities in the southeastern province of Guangdong discriminated against African migrants in the process of coronavirus prevention and control.

"During our fight against coronavirus, the Chinese government has been attaching great importance to the lives and health of foreign nationals in China. All foreigners are treated equally, and we reject differential treatment," Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, adding that the U.S. was provoking confrontation, which was not only immoral but also irresponsible.

Last week, the U.S. consulate in Guangdong alleged that local officials had ordered bars and restaurants not to serve African clients, purportedly out of fear that foreigners could be infected with COVID-19. The consulate also claimed that the city was forcing those who came in contact with anyone from Africa to go into quarantine.

This prompted African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat to express "extreme concern" over the issue.

Zhao insisted at a news briefing that "China's friendly policy toward Africa will never change, our friendship with African countries and their people will never waver, and we will never discriminate against our African brothers.”

The Chinese official urged the U.S. to focus on its own pandemic prevention and control, reminding them that attempts to provoke confrontation amid China-Africa friendly relations will never succeed.

As the coronavirus continues to become more severe in Africa, the Chinese government and Chinese foundations have delivered aid to the continent.

On April 6, China's sent much-needed medical supplies to 18 African countries. The aid included Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), N95 face masks, medical protective suits, goggles, gloves, temporal artery thermometers, and ventilators.

While the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation made a second round of donations to support Africa in the fight against COVID-19, aimed at all 54 countries in Africa.

"Batches of medical supplies for Africa are en route with 500 ventilators, 200,000 suits and face shields, 2,000 thermometers, a million swabs, and extraction kits, and 500,000 gloves," the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation said in a statement early this week.

As of Monday, the African continent registers over 14,000 cases with 2,523 recoveries and 754 deaths reported.
