They definitely need to charge him. It's unusual to charge a former U.S. President with a crime. However, his violations of law were so egregious that they cannot be ignored, even if he is a former U.S. President.

I doubt Trump will be. I would love to be wrong.

Because there is no higher status that can be achieved in rightwing circles than suffering the most minor punishment for anything. Facing even the most minor consequence for your actions is antithetical to their view of the law, where the law is only meant to punish poors, women, gays, etc.

Is that the Republican party is more about eliminating the power of the state completely because they have been on a goal oriented thing for decades now. Which is to make the brand of the Republican party the interests of the corporations and to completely destroy government power. It is keeping a total domination of the USA by corporations who want to not be regulated or told what to do by government. They refuse any control by government. They got used to it by abusing all the nations who did not have as much wealth as the USA did and got used to toppling duly elected leaders and legitimate democratic frameworks. They got used to being left alone and dominating. Why not doing it at home as well?
That is why inconsistency with democratic rule is dangerous. You get used to using violence and coercion on foreign soil and disrespecting voters on foreign soil and you got total freedom to do what you want with your for profit fiefdom? Why stop there? Keep going. Go for the big prize. The market of 330 million and make sure the peons get nothing there as well? Undermine the rules and the procedures.
Make it some fascists who do your bidding? They worked hard on the goal.
The problem are the voters in the USA. Who are increasingly apathetic and unengaged and used to struggling and limping along now....uninvolved and basically not doing what is necessary to remove these people who are total sellouts to those powerful interests. Because they have a two party system who both love profit. And are easily manipulated and bought off.
Greed is a horrible thing. But it does bring down powerful nations in history. If you don't tackle greed? You have no future. Get rid of the money in politics, and punish the politicians with zero interest in principled politics. It is almost impossible now. You got Bluto types who think the problem are liberal voters. And who don't want democratic votes. The USA is full of liberals. Just get rid of the liberals and they see a bright future. They don't understand that democracies are complex. Many different political points of view and you have to talk, negotiate and cooperate with the supposed 'enemy' or you don't get a damn thing done in life. But that lesson is moot for them.

At least put up something like "corrected for you", and / or openly declare him as a Trump minion.
You can even actually ask the Dems to sic on him. If he so loves that badge of honor maybe it's not that bad an idea to set him up as an example for other wannabes.
