I've read Snyder's work, The Road to Unfreedom, and it's interesting but I don't really buy it. Putin has certainly courted the far right in Russia but he's not a Fascist in any meaningful sense. Not everything bad in the world if Fascist, I wish we'd learn this. Putin views the Islamic republics on the Russian borders with immense distrust, the brutal war in Checynya nearly cost him his rule and he won't want instability or rogue violence. He's deeply fearful of Islamic extremism and was a keen supporter of the so called 'war on terror'. There's no chance he'd enjoy the stoking up of radical Islamic feelings within Russia.

This is no way a defence of Putin in general. He's become a despot and bullying aggressor who sees human life as expendable in his goal of Russian aggrandisement and ego stroking.
