European Commission vice-president Guenter Verheugen has questioned the need for small EU countries to have their own member of the European Commission, as part of far-reaching proposals to reform the EU executive.

This was expected, of course its rather amusing how German desire to pursue hegemony in Europe leads to premature blunt declaration of German lust for power over others. Of course it starts with "small" EU states but in the end it will be the only "the rightous superior state and nation destined to rule the Europe" that will have the right to appoint officials.

Don't be that tough on the Germans.

They are doing a good and great job, all in all.

German crime levels are very low, and the security feeling when walking streets is much higher than elsewhere.

It's not an agitated country. It's a mature one. Anglo-saxon, with a germanic touch for sure.

McDonald's waiters and waitresses are professional, and do not look at you as if you had been their pal. So are salesmen elsewhere, who do not make you feel like being their personal bothering agent.

You are encouraged to show seriousness and dignity, reason why the average German pays more attention to the way he dresses.

Ok they are (sometimes extremely) irritating. They even say they wear a stick upon their flouf themselves, and complain about the rules and the stuff.

What has my butt laughed off is when I see a polish driver towing an accidented french one, for surely reselling or fixing it somewhere in Eastern Europe.

All around you see BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches, flying all around on the speed-unlimited highway.

You see U.S. armoured vehicles as well sometimes... For your own comfort.

You can dress awfull and sloppy, but still can dress cleanly and tidily, and care to invest in shoes on a regular basis. That's how to pay some respect.

You know, I was going to make exactly the same comment as Shade did.

Then I was going to goose step around, just like John Cleese...

No government with 27 members can work efficiently. There are some totally useless phantom-seats in the European Commission already. However, competence is not a matter of origin, of course, but it seems to be obvious, that a lot of small members would lose their places in the Commission by a rationalization.

This is turning into a parody thread might the powers that be take some interest and nuke it?

Back on topic, considering that the commissioners cannot take orders from their country of origin and are meant to be pro-European rather than pro-their-own-country I would see no difference in reducing the number of members. However excluding some members based on nationality would never be accepted.

If only some people weren't still living 60 years in the past.

Sadly Germans still do. :hmm:

Let your awesome twins teach them a lesson!

I am certain they will. We already blocked German attempts to create an axis with Russia out of EU .

I think the Guenter Verheugen was thinking of efficiency in the functioning of the EU apparatus, rather then German world domination - The year is 2007, not 1939.

Anyway, Germany pays the bill, so they'd better shut up!
Long live the majestic twins of Poland, who save Europe and the whole world from Germany (whose economy makes Europe go around) and Russia (where we get natural gas from)!

Why should commissioners be based on country? Lets just go for the US system: a senate where each country has equal representation, and a (more powerful) parliament which is actually democratic (that's the one we have now).

We shouldn't have commissioners, but an actual government made up of MEPs.

Really ? I don't recall Germany ever paying 540 billion Euro of war reperations.

Long live the majestic twins of Poland, who save Europe and the whole world from Germany (whose economy makes Europe go around)

European economy goes around thanks to USA, not Germany. And Europe would be much better of if Germany and its Axis allies like Hungary wouldn't ravage it in WW2.

Germany is full of arrogant nationalism, the belief that they are better then the rest of the world. It manifests itself in many forms, Nazism is just one of them. You can find the belief that Germany is better then the rest of Europe in many German political movements.

So Germans still run concentration camps, do they? You are full of it.

Poor stannis, still unable to engage in rational conversation.
While Germany is not engaging in that sort of behaviour it certainly allows traditional discrimination of minority groups and its arrogant nationalism now manifests itself in silly claims of "Germany funding Europe"(welll they destroyed it in the first place), Germans as "victims of WW2", and "Germany is best suited to dictate others what to do". German press if full of slogans that "Germany must educate others" "They haven't grown to level of Germany" etc.The typical German attitude of arrogance and nationalism.

That's funny, coming from you.

Just seething with racial hatreds aren't you? Guess someone is living 60 years in the past

While Germany is not engaging in that sort of behaviour

Which proves that they are not like they were 60 years ago.

traditional discrimination of minority groups and its arrogant nationalism

What discrimination? List sources if you are going to make such a claim.

German press if full of slogans that "Germany must educate others" "They haven't grown to level of Germany"

Really? You often read the imperialist German press then do you?

The typical German attitude of arrogance and nationalism.

No worse than your own typical hatred of Germans, which verges on the racist.

Oh, cute, no arguments so we are so desperate to personall attack the another poster with lies.
Which proves that they are not like they were 60 years ago.

Attempts to dominate Europe and alliances with Russia in order to do so, proves otherwise.

Polish father has become embroiled in a row with Germany's welfare authorities after they banned him from talking to his daughters in his native language.

In a case that has outraged public opinion in Poland, Wojciech Pormorski, 36, has been told by the Hamburg city authorities that regular dialogue in Polish with his daughters, aged seven and four, would hinder their integration into German society.

Mr Pormorski separated from his German wife 18 months ago and has been denied access to their daughters after refusing to guarantee that he would speak to them only in German.

A well-known refugee from Poland's former communist dictatorship, Mr Pormorski has said he will take the issue to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. "I cannot and will not accept this kind of discrimination. I have spoken Polish to my daughters ever since they were born. This is humiliating treatment," Mr Pormorski told The Telegraph last week.

Given the sensitive nature of Polish-German relations, Mr Pormorski's predicament has captured the imagination of the Polish media. One Warsaw news magazine suggested that the German authorities' approach was reminiscent of the Nazi era. The affair has been drawn to the attention of the Polish government, which is expected to back Mr Pormorski's right to pass on his linguistic heritage to his two girls.

The Polish consulate in Hamburg has pointed out that in 1991 the German government signed a friendship and co-operation agreement with Poland, stipulating that the "linguistic identity" of Poles living in Germany should be protected.

Mr Pormorski fled to Germany in the 1980s after his father, Vaclav, a prominent member of the Solidarity movement, was jailed for opposing Poland's communist regime. At a meeting last year with officials from Hamburg's child welfare department, he was told that he would be allowed to see his daughters only twice a month. The visits would be supervised by a social worker and speaking Polish was forbidden.

An official said: "From an educational standpoint, we do not accept that it would be in the children's interests that these supervised meetings should take place in the Polish language. Speaking German can only be of advantage to the children as they are growing up in this country and go to school here."

The eccentric reason given for insisting on German-only visits is said to have mystified many social workers.

The department also said that the father's visits had to be supervised because both Mr Pormorski and his wife claimed that they "came to blows" during their frequent arguments, but Andrej Kremer, the Polish consul in Hamburg, said that the authorities had turned down an "easy solution" to that problem, which would be to have a Polish-speaking social worker present at Mr Pormorski's visits.

Mr Pormorski, a teacher of German literature, insists that he will continue to fight for his right to speak Polish to his children.

Even a favourable verdict at Strasbourg, however, may be of little help to him. Last week Germany's Constitutional Court decreed for the first time that European Human Rights' Court judgments were not binding in German domestic courts.

Really? You often read the imperialist German press then do you?

Yes. Daily. FAZ for example.

No worse than your own typical hatred of Germans, which verges on the racist.

Oh another rational claim of stannis-criticism of German nationalism is "racial hatred". Ah where did stannis learned such brillang argumentation-Stalinist Russia perhaps ?

You said earlier in the thread:

Personal attacks, indeed.

Attempts to dominate Europe and alliances with Russia in order to do so, proves otherwise.

How are they attempting to do that? What alliance with Russia do you refer to?

Polish father has become embroiled in a row with Germany's welfare authorities after they banned him from talking to his daughters in his native language.

That's a bad story, but don't fool yourself into thinking that discrimination doesn't exist everywhere, because it does.

FAZ for example.

I'd like to see that, is there a link?
