Could it be that the rock had already almost cut his hand? In any case, I'd assume he didn't saw through bone, but cut between the bones just below the elbow joint.

I saw a thing like this on *lowers voice* Sally */voice* about a guy who did the same thing. There was a psychologist who reckoned that anyone could do that if they were in a similar situation. I remember thinking to my self, "You've got to be shitting me!" There is no way in hell I could cut off my own arm.

I saw this on the news just the other night. No, he didn't saw through the bone, but he didn't cut at the wrist either. Realising that his blunt pocket knife wouldn't even make a dent in the bone, he maneuvered his arm in such a way as to break both the bones in his forearm; one at a time.
