In 1569, Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator created the “Mercator projection,” a form of map that was valuable for navigation because it allowed a ship to sail in a constant compass direction to reach its destination, eliminating difficult and error-prone course corrections.
However, the Mercator projection also inflates the size of objects away from the equator, which, centuries later, greatly exaggerated the size of the Soviet Union and the threat of the Red Menace. Adding to the distortion was the fact that much of the enlarged portion of the Soviet Union was sparsely populated forests and tundra.
