An interesting bit of Caribbean history--who had many slaves brought in to do hard labor. A lot of the Indians such as the Caribs, the Tainos, etc died en masse due to small pox and other European diseases. Syphilis was taken back to Europe by the Europeans along with smoking tobacco that killed millions over centuries due to nicotine addiction and so on. But, many Tainos chose suicide over slavery. So did many African slaves who sometimes would throw themselves over the sides of slave ships to avoid living out a life in chains. Nat Turner rebelled and was met with a bloody end. Slavery happens for the same reasons that workers tolerate bad working conditions for many years--fear of the consequences of challenging the ones holding power. Either the power to sign your paycheck so you can feed your family, or keep your home, etc. Or the power to kill you, maim or torture you into compliance if you disobey. Fear is the challenge. It is a primary human emotion.
