Those who lived near Stalin (his daughter among others), would say it was quite the opposite. It was very simple in Stalin's home, he didn't have much clothes, his son slept on the couch etc. What is also remarkable was that he didn't allow privileges to his children, they didn't get into special school or anything. It goes without saying that his living can't even be compared to that of other world leaders. The gap is lightyears wide.

In the HBO movie of Stalin in which SUPPOSEDLY his daughter contributed biographical issues of her father, Stalin lived in a big house, had servants, good cars, and while still he didn't live like a movie star he didn't live in a shack like a fucked up proletariat either.

Stalin's children weren't all same. This particular daughter did an exception as she went on to serve the Western bourgeoisie. She was an anti-communist, but I recall reading quotes from her describing Stalin's simple living habits and other things, like how he expressed deep disgust when he saw the personality cult built around him. This daughter was an enemy of communism, but she remained somewhat honest on some issues such as how her father lived. He didn't live in a shack no, but he didn't leave behind much property when he died, either (few pieces of clothing etc.).
