It has been argued that Bernie is not a real socialist despite his claim of being one, and that his loss to Hillary really doesn't mean anything. It has also been argued that Trump's victory is actually a victory for the left because his implosive character reveals that the right has collapsed from the inside-out in forsakening the properness behind property rights just to do what it practically takes to win...

...yet still, we live in a world where the right is dominating the left. It seems to be that only farfetched academics are the ones making this point. In reality, the right is pushing work ethic onto the left after the right alienated the left from believing in abuse, negligence, blaming of victims, and telling victims to deal with it and pull themselves up by their bootstraps on a ruggedly individualist basis.

The subversion of the right has backfired in that despite how its character has imploded in forsakening the properness behind property rights, inequality has only been reinforced. We especially see this among unions where a majority of union members, excluding teacher unions, have voted for Trump. These same union members have laughed at college grads for being under and unemployed, especially when talking about how "basic skills" are needed while encouraging people to downgrade into blue-collar labor.

For starters, I'd say that academia has betrayed the true intelligentsia. Academia has become a joke. It is no longer a place of higher learning. It is a place where people simply go to party, cause a ruckus, and ultimately waste their time. By the time graduates leave, they are dismissed with cheesy speeches about how the real world awaits, and half of graduates become under or unemployed. The lack of real networking between academic institutions and wider communities as well as the lack of harmonious curriculum that actually applies towards working as well as encouraging respectful attitudes in the workplace has neglected and ultimately abandoned an entire generation of students.

The implication is we are now living in a world where the working class has become increasingly right-wing while spiting intellectuals as physical weaklings who advocate leftism in order to advocate equality to compensate for lacking strength. Academia is no longer a place where people develop their talents to work smart. Instead, it has become a place where people talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

Another thing I'd say is the left's obsession with learning from experience has catered to the right's obsession with going along with traditional tried and true ways of life. It also enables the right to engage in abuse, negligence, blaming of victims, etc. because abuse happens when nobody's watching. Therefore, there's no evidence to present to prove a case that people deserve to be punished. In turn, scientifically minded people get sabotaged before their experiments are carried out. It doesn't help to be a scientist when your laboratory is under attack before any results can be evaluated.

The last thing I'd say is the left's historical appeal to pop culture has backfired. Pop culture has encouraged the right's insensitivity to take off. Before, pop culture was looked upon as a leftist domain to contrast against classy right-wing culture. Now, pop culture is looked upon as a rightist domain to contrast against leftist elitism.

It is for these reasons that I do not believe the left is going to recover for a very long time. The left has become increasingly dogmatic to the point that "socialism" is its Christianity as proven by how many Bernie supporters didn't even know what socialism really was. Still, the Overton Window has been shifted in the wrong direction.

Indeed, those shirts with Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Che are what the left has devolved into - a goofy party that doesn't deserve to be taken seriously.

You can shift the Overton window all you like, but you can't subvert reality itself. Certain actions will have certain consequences based on the material reality in place.

This has certain real world consequences that can't be papered over with BS or double-talk. Workers will either see better jobs or they won't. Either they will have health care or they won't. Either their SS and Medicare will be cut or it won't.

Here's the thing. The working class already exists at the bleeding edge. They have zero margin. Any change in their circumstance they will know right away. You won't be able to tweet jobs into existence or distract their attention. Distraction works fine with the upper middle class; they have a margin of security that enables them to gloss over negative changes in their lives.

Such is not the case with the working class. They have no room for illusion, either from the left or the right.
