A Theresa May stunt to garnish votes? Only one thousand troops on the streets is a pointless exercise? Will all the UK police have guns?

Nearly 1,000 soldiers are being immediately deployed on Britain's streets to support police in the wake of the Manchester suicide bombing, as the UK remains on critical terror alert amid fears Salman Abedi did not act alone.

Armed troops will take on duties for guarding high profile buildings and embassies, freeing up armed police officers to join counter-terrorism duties.

Soldiers are due to take up position at Buckingham Palace, Parliament and Downing Street on Wednesday as part of the deployment named Operation Temperer, which is being enacted after security experts warned the Government that another terrorist attack could be imminent. Police forces outside London have also asked for troops.

Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, said: “We have now gone to critical level in terms of the threat. Op Temperer has been invoked and that means that there will be additional military personnel coming to back fill the armed police officers so that they can support other areas.

“Today we have 984 members of the military coming forward as requested by police.”

The authorities are seeking to establish if Abedi, the Manchester suicide bomber who left 22 people dead, was part of a wider network. Ms Rudd has said it is "likely" Abedi was not acting alone.

Greater Manchester Police revealed on Wednesday that three men have been arrested in the south of the city in connection with the concert bomb attack. It follows the arrest yesterday of a 23-year-old man, who remains in custody.

Prime Minister Theresa May has raised the threat level to the highest possible rating, meaning another atrocity is expected. She said a "wider group of individuals" could have been involved in the Manchester Arena blast rather than just Abedi.

It comes as a man with a knife was arrested near Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. The man was detained by police on The Mall just moments before the Queen passed by in a car on her way to an engagement with the Duke of Edinburgh at St Paul's Cathedral.

A picture showed the man surrounded by officers and handcuffed as he sat on the ground, while a police officer nearby held what was believed to be a large blade that had been seized.

The Metropolitan Police said the incident, at around 10.40am, is not believed to be terror-related.

Scotland Yard said the arrest yards from Buckingham Palace was 'not believed to be terror-related'

Earlier, the Ministry of Defence announced that the Changing the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace had been cancelled today to redeploy police officers.

Monday night's attack at a concert by US pop star Ariana Grande left 22 people dead, including an eight-year-old girl, and dozens injured. Click here to read more about the victims.

Twenty people remain in "critical care", medics said on Wednesday, with people suffering from "horrific injuries" including major organ damage and potential loss of limbs.

The decision to raise Britain's terror threat level for the first time since 2013 was taken at a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee.

Counter-terrorism agencies have mounted a massive inquiry into the outrage - the worst terrorist attack since 52 innocent people were killed in the July 7 bombings in London in 2005.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terror group claimed responsibility for the barbaric attack, which involved a home-made device packed with nuts and bolts which exploded in the venue's foyer as thousands of young people were leaving.

Tanks at Heathrow...

As news emerges that armed British troops will be deployed to guard "key locations" such as Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, we've taken a look at previous deployments of forces personnel to the streets.

Operation Temperer, which is believed to allow up to 5,000 troops to be deployed in support of the police, is being enacted for the first time after security experts warned the government that another terrorist attack could be imminent.

British troops patrolled the streets of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Under Operation Banner, they were deployed to assist the Royal Ulster Constabulary between August 1969 and July 2007 - the longest continuous deployment in British military history.

The British Army was initially deployed after the August 1969 riots, at the request of the unionist government of Northern Ireland. About 21,000 British troops were deployed at the peak of the operation in the 1970s, mostly from Britain.

The only other recent major deployment of troops to the streets in response to a terror threat came in 2003. Tony Blair sent tanks and 450 personnel to Heathrow airport (pictured above) and other London locations after warnings of a plot to bring down an airliner with a surface-to-air missile.
The then-Prime Minister was strongly criticised for risking undue panic.

The last time troops were officially widely deployed on the British mainland was during the police strikes of 1919. They're also known to have escorted food lorries during the General Strike of 1926.
Other Domestic Deployments

The Armed Forces made up 50% of the security manpower at the London 2012 Olympic Games, with 18,200 troops deployed to provide security.
The government was forced to involve more soldiers than previously planned at the last minute, amid fears that private security firm G4S could not deliver the number of staff it promised.
An additional 1,000-strong unarmed contingency force was arranged in the event of an "Olympics-related civil emergency".
Emergency Response (Non-Terror Related)

Other UK operations involving the Armed Forces have ranged from reacting to fire strikes and floods, to one-off emergencies like the 'big freeze' in 2010 and 2001's Foot and Mouth outbreak, to the regular safe disposal of historic explosive devices upon discovery.
Remember the Green Goddess? It was the fire engine used by the military when they had to step in for the fire service. It was most notably used in 1977 and 2002-2003.
In 1977, 20,750 servicemen manned more than 1,000 Green Goddess engines as firefighters went on strike.
Between 2002 and 2003, the armed forces provided emergency fire service cover in Operation Fresco. They once again used the vintage Green Goddess, alongside the modern red fire engines.
Threat Level

The move to enact Operation Temperer comes after an extremely unusual raising of the terror threat level to 'critical', meaning an attack is expected imminently.

It's only the third time the risk has been set at the highest level since the scale was made public in 2006.

The others came in:

August 2006 after a plot was uncovered to bomb up to 10 transatlantic flights.
June 2007 after a plot to bomb a club in central London.
On both occasions, the risk level was lowered after a few days.

When plans were drawn up to deploy large numbers of troops to the streets, they were said to have been contentious with the Army leadership, due to fears about overstretch, morale problems and difficulties with deciding when to end the operation.

It's been argued that once soldiers are deployed, it's hard to justify withdrawing them without also lowering the terrorist threat level.

Theresa May's predecessor David Cameron is said to have been reluctant to implement the plan, fearing it would provoke comparisons to the Troubles and give the impression that the government had lost control and was imposing martial law.

Mail on Sunday writer Peter Hitchens wrote in 2015, when the newspaper revealed details of the plan:

"The deployment of thousands of armed soldiers on the streets of British cities... would be a huge departure from the practice of nearly two centuries and in my view a long step towards the end of liberty as we know it."
"Once deployed, they might well become permanent, like the gates on Downing Street and the armed police who infest central London and major airports. Who would have the courage to withdraw them?

"It is all very sad, and not what my parents’ generation went through the 1939-45 war to bring about."

In announcing the move, the Prime Minister said that the police had asked for military support, adding that Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon had approved the request.

Mrs May said it came after experts at the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) raised the threat level.

The JTAC, based at MI5's London headquarters, brings together representatives from 16 government departments and agencies.

The country's senior counter-terrorism officer on Tuesday acknowledged the use of troops was "unusual" but said it would allow police to "stretch our armed capability".

Britain isn't the first country to deploy troops to guard against terrorist threats in cities either.

Other European countries to do so include France, which deployed over 10,000 under Operation Sentinelle after the January 2015 attacks in Paris, and Italy, which deployed 4,800 troops in Rome and other cities in February 2015.

Oh shit. I'll bet any second here an ISIS F-22 Raptor is about to launch an AIM-120 AMRAAM at me since, apparently, radical Islam controls Western air-space. How far do you think the radical Islam shock troops are from marching on my house?

You are clearly not making a panicked statement about your desire to be a victim, right? You seriously are stating that in actual war, "we," are losing to, "radical Islam."

---

As for England and the Muslim question, the path to quelling sectarian tensions are obvious and already officially part of British policy: Take all the Muslim areas and anyone in there until you get a 54% majority of Muslims, then make it its own country within the United Kingdom. If the non-Muslims don't like it, shoot them, contain their families behind, "peace walls," and spend money silently supporting the most radical Muslim groups possible to the point that you're funding assholes that go around and torture Christians for fun. Also, do your best to separate the Muslim and non-Muslim communities, and encourage and enforce Muslim parades through Christian neighborhoods so that the Christians annually remember that they are a conquered people under the heel of a partisan state :excited:

---

In seriousness, this is a tragedy of course. It speaks to the times that the response is boots-to-ground for an isolated attack. Like most acts of individual terror, it will not work.

You truly have no discernible clue as to how Islam takes over a country. They don't have to do it by warfare, they can do it thru population numbers and intimidation in any given country.

You haven't noticed all the Muslim no-go zones in Paris and other European cities? You haven't noticed that London elected an Islamic mayor who obviously favors Muslims over the other citizens of London?

You probably have noticed the increased Muslim terrorist attacks throughout Europe, but you foolishly buy into the leftist media narrative that these attacks are all just lone wolf incidents. If Europeans continue to have the same sort of naivete which you display, the rulers of Europe will one day look like the Islamic rulers of the Middle East.

Could you give me some historical examples of this happening so I know what to look out for and how to prepare myself?

If you have facts, please leave a citation so that I can examine your evidence.

If this is a big emotional blubbering session from you again, please just state it as such so we can all ignore your feeling mongering.

Leftists for some inexplicable reason can't put 2+2 together when it comes to Islam.

Could be that years of cannabis use has impaired their judgment, not that they were very bright to begin with.

Yea, like it's really a "phobia" when a group of people are trying their Islamic best to take over your country, and then do whatever they wish with you and your family. That is not a phobia, it is reality.

History has proven this time and time again...Islam doesn't wish to assimilate, it wants to conquer. Yet leftists so naively believe it can't happen in Europe.
