Yes, but she fled AFTER it switched to capitalism. That's when lifespans strated to drop and republics started to experience civil war. AFTER communism.

This AFTER COMMUNISM is a good warning for Cubans not to throw away a good thing.

Way more people died as a result of the civil war in Russia and after that many more died thanks to communist polices that led to mass starvations

one of the main reasons of USSR collapse is that majority of people did not believe in communism and had no interest of fighting for survival of a communist regime that enslaved and starved them for decades

I'm sure the censors do allow some US programming in that isn't controversial or informative, it gives the state media the appearance of being fair and balanced. There's nothing on Cuban television that state censors haven't approved.

The entire world is saturated with commercial propaganda. What Telesur and Cubavision (and other national networks all over the world) try to do is to balance the skewed commercial lies of commercial media

Except it's only balanced if all perspectives are allowed to freely compete. Fuck your censorship.

No one said the people in the videos you posted were particularly brainwashed. As I said, ALL Cubans have access to Western media products. The people in your videos don't like Cuban society at the moment that they are filmed. This type of thing is easy to find in any country on earth.

Ok, so they aren't brainwashed and they aren't lying, that means that you believe them when they say there is horrible state repression and awful economic conditions. Who can blame them for not liking those things? Do you like those things? Would you prefer to be impoverished and repressed by the Cuban state? Do you think most Cubans enjoy their poverty and repression and support the regime doing it to them? Get real.

Yes, but she fled AFTER it switched to capitalism.

She said Ukraine was very nice before she left, so she didn't flee the country. You're just making up bullshit.

You do know that people can just watch the video and see that you're full of shit, right? In your mind are these little bullshit gambits usually successful? If so, that's a little delusional. If not, then why bother? Also, are you intellectually satisfied with bullshit? Personally I need my views to stand up to the most rigorous criticism before I'm satisfied, but some people seem content with flimsy sophistry and blatant bullshit, why is that?

Please present evidence for this claim.

So, it is only fair if Cuba allows just as much air time to the superpower with billions of dollars that is actively trying to overthrow the Cuban government as it allows for its own programming?

Would you say that the level of satisfaction is less than or more than normal for a developing country in Central America or the Caribbean?

This thing where you accuse everyone of being stupid and lacking in critical thinking skills, while simultaneously mindlessly copying and pasting whatever YouTube videos you can find that supoort your point....well, it is a humourous juxtaposition.

By the way, did you hear of Operation Mongoose?

Characterizing the presentation of credible testimony from survivors of the regime as "mindlessly copying and pasting whatever YouTube videos" is comically consistent with the rest of your bullshit and lame sophistry.

It's only fair when there's full public access with direct democratic control of the media and the public has full freedom of speech and expression. That's a real socialist media system.

Yes, we all know you think I am a big meanie.

Please provide evidence for your claim that Cuban “censors do allow some US programming in that isn't controversial or informative, it gives the state media the appearance of being fair and balanced. There's nothing on Cuban television that state censors haven't approved.”

Please provide evidence that this is not the case in Cuba.

Also, should those Cubans who are working with the US to overthrow the Cuban government also have full access and control?

No we right wingers and centrists want all Cubans to have a say in running Cuba including Blacks and women. Lefties seem to believe that Cuba should suffer under the iron rule of a series of old white middle class men.

During Fidel's days, the CIA was working on mind-control techniques (MK ULTRA), as well as various chemical and biological ways to kill socialist-leaning nations, their leaders, and their peoples.

So it wasn't possible, then, to allow these poison-tipped "freedom-agents" access to your water supply or airwaves. And with the kind of lies and death coming out of America in the last 17 years, it's not time now either. Only when the capitalist countries demonstrate their real commitment to world peace and mutual respect (they never will) OR disappear (they will eventually) will it be time for real socialist countries to let down their guard.

In the meantime, the "victims of the regime" live better lives than most North Americans do. Westerners are the victims of ultra-capitalist regimes and stupidity-through commercial media input.

Shut up Qatz, history didn't happen!

Anyways, I booked the bike-ride around Havana and its forest, after all. Figured I would do that now since internet will be lacking when I'm there (something else I'm looking forward to). It worked out well because the three cyclists that organize this tour live a 10-min walk away from where I'm staying.

Footage was filmed by independent journalist Serafin Moran ( Cuba Reporta) of recently deceased political prisoner Hamell Santiago Maz Hernandez. Seen here in the prison unit known as Zanja, months later, Santiago would die under suspicious circumstances after beatings, disease and cruel treatment by regime guards.

#Cuba #Repression A #dissident family was sentenced last November to the Municipal Court of Holguín on charges of "defaming the martyrs of the country" and public disorder right after the death of the Cuban dictator. The mother, Maydolis Leyva Portelles, was sentenced to one year imprisonment while her daughters and son, the 27-year-old twin girls Adairis and Anairis Miranda Leyva and Fidel Batista Leyva, were sentenced to one year of correctional work with detention. The four are members of the "Olegario Charlot Espileta" Command, affiliated with the Cuban Reflection Movement and have collaborated with the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL), activist and dissident organizations. The dissidents took to the streets on November 27 while a curfew was imposed after the death of #Fidel. All were arrested, taken to a police unit in Holguin, then subjected to an act of repudiation where their home was vandalized. To make matters worse, the prosecutor threatened to take Anairis children away to "re educate" them to revolution ideals. Since March 7, the twin sisters and their brother Fidel Batista declared themselves under a hunger strike to demand their freedom, the freedom of political prisoner Eduardo Cardet, and the ceasing of State repression. Both sisters are in delicate state in ER while their brother is remains in solitary confinement in prison. This is a statement from their mother Maydolis Leyva ( under house arrest) : " They are very delicate. My daughters are under the risk of cardiac arrest. The doctors confirmed this and I thought it was an exaggeration but when I saw them I had no doubt of their health deterioration. My son Fidel is in solitary confinement and he is urinating blood. They won't take him to a hospital." We ask for everyone's solidarity. What future will Maydoli's grandchildren will have under such #repression? Please share!!

The Cuban Criminal Code states that participants in public meetings or demonstrations can be punished with a fine of up to $100 fees or one to three months imprisonent. Instead, people are supposed to file their complaints with relevant government entities. The government says that in order to organize a protest, the government must be notified in advance, but has prevented dissidents from doing so. Cubans live with a great fear of ending up behind bars if they express their dissatisfaction.

In Cuba, a man was detained by police and sentenced to a year and a half as a political prisoner for placing a sign outside his home expressing his right to freedom of speech. He reports that the conditions in prisons are dismal and that political prisoners are mistreated by police. However, the government reports that prison conditions are lavish and rehabilitate the male prisoners. Officials mediums of Cuban information reported that the national and international press had visited the prisons, but this political prisoner says that the press never visited.
