Thank you for a very interesting and good hearted report. I am very glad you got to go. My only regret about my trip is that it is over but, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Did you take photos?

Feminism skinster the answer is feminism. Porn as well has a negative effect but the two are related I suspect. Courting in the west and romance disappeared with destruction of family values as well with proper men and women relation. This is the price we pay for it.

Skinster

So pleased you enjoyed your trip. Hubby's there now, and will be home Tuesday  But he called a couple of days ago, and said he was asked to go again in July for 2 weeks. Seems they want to open another school for the handicapped in Gitmo province. The good news is he's thinking of retiring early.

Insert congo dance here

Lather rinse repeat. :hippy:

Thanks. I would recommend going there for the Labour Day parade, it was such a fun end to my trip. I took a lot of pictures but I don't know how to post pics on this board. When I get the motivation to upload them on Facebook I'll make the album public and send you a link.

SS, you should try to go with your husband sometime! I know you have to maintain a farm but see if you can make it even for a couple of nights. It was a very good experience and the way people are there compared to how people are in NYC has made it really difficult for me to step outside of my apartment since I got back. :D

Skinster,

It's more the heat that prevents me, although, I must admit, the older I grow, the more medical tourism becomes attractive, and therefore Cuba looks better. In the meantime, I'll continue to sing their praises for managing social issues so brilliantly and on a shoe-string budget. Compare Puerto Rico and Cuba....

Don't just compare them ... Cuba should BUY THEM OUT. I bet they'd sell cheap !

Yea, not like we let them get hit by a natural disaster, stopped sending aid, and let them linger without power for half a year. Who do they think they are, American citizens?

Skinster, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself in Havana, and that bike tour with Pedro sounds like a blast. There were no bike tours of the city of Holguin (at least, none that were advertised or posted anywhere) and I guess this is because it's not really a tourist destination.

But I still hesitate to make Havana my next Cuba trip because, like you, I need to get out of the city when I'm on vacation.

Like you, I also noticed the chasm of difference between the politeness and consideration of others, between Montreal and the farmland and fishing villages of Holguin province. But I'm not sure if Havana residents are as other-people-centered and socially smooth, as the rural folk I met.

Did you have a chance to visit rural areas?

...

Now that Skinster (and I) are back from Cuba, it's time to start planning our next pofo vacation package.
I think I have found another interesting destination with no cars or crime:

I Went To North Korea: What You've Heard Vs. What I Saw

Looks like the author jumped into a time machine and then stole my thread concept.

Thanks Qatz. I booked my bike tour and walking tour before I flew into Cuba, because I knew that I would likely be offline the entire trip. I found them on AirBnB.

I didn't stay in Central Havana, but in Vedado, an hour walk-away from the centre, which was a less tourist-y, more local place. I would've traveled out further to different towns if I wasn't by myself but I figured I would do so on a next trip anyway, so no, I didn't go to any rural places this time.

I'm down for visiting the DPRK. Can we make the trip for next Labour Day? :excited:

Rich, you never studied Cuban history in depth. You should. Cuba had to fight the Spanish and the losses were extremely heavy in the hundreds of thousands for their independence. The USA stepped in and wanted to keep a stranglehold on the economy and the society. They were not the democratic liberators they painted themselves to be. Not in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Grenada, USA Virgin Islands and the list goes on. The USA has an ugly, dark, smut filled and oppressive history in the Caribbean islands and in the Central American nations. Colombia doesn't like the USA's history with them either and the list goes on....Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, etc. It is UGLY with a capital "U". The problem is that no one wants to admit that the USA has backed dictators, brutal torture and death squads in order for the big USA corporations to keep making profits in Latin America. That is their 'plan'. It is a bad plan. It creates deep hatreds, resentments and it basically undermines any ability to try to influence positively any really honest nationalist and native government in a Latin American country.

What the USA should do is admit its dark, ugly and bad politics and policies that suck and come up with intelligent leadership, innovative and cooperative policies and an excellent plan to collaborate with Latin American legitimate governments. But they don't. And this dumb administration with totally mentally defective policies in foreign international relationships is not going to help.

An excellent summation and commentary.

I would add that Cuba tried to foster several S. American governments that were eventually and openly subverted by the USA (Grenada, Nicaragua, Bolivia). A new, Cuban led, dynamic might resurrect the region, especially if the US aided, rather than interdicted it.

Stormsmith wrote: Turning Puerto Rico into casino-land would save them.”

Inre: Puerto Rico, Casino's can generate funds rapidly, but I'm not sure flying there at some expense, to risk life and limb in an area devoid of federal support, is an attractive concept. There are a LOT of alternative "Casino" destinations that offer greater security.

Cuba could "liberate" the island with some unarmed construction crews working on roads and power grids ... Then "Invite" the population to vote for independence and Cuban annexation. That ought to get some federal attention at least.

That would be great Zam, except that the Plutocrats running the show in the United States would never allow that if they could help it. Much of the problems Socialism and Socialists have had in the past is due to the Money-Grubbers and their Dupes.
