The deep state (loosely synonymous with the shadow government, or occasionally permanent government or permanent state) is in contrast to the public structures which appear to be directing individual nation states. It is an intensely secretive, informal, fluid network of deep politicians whose deep state milieux effectively amplify their influence over national governments.

Democratic facade

Since about 1800, and particularly in the 20th century, deep states in many nation states have worked to maintain a cover of party politics, focusing on personalities of individual politicians or issue of identity politics.

This façade was by and large successful at hiding the real business of deep politics from public scrutiny. In the 21st century, in spite of massive consolidation of corporate media, this veil is proving increasingly thin.

Composition

The core of deep state groups and deep state milieu could be summarised by Dwight Eisenhower's "Military-industrial-congressional complex", although intelligence agencies are essential to their functioning. They are made up of:

The leadership of intelligence agencies;
Deep politicians, i.e. individuals who set up deep state milieux and who broker agreements between other members of the deep state.
Some senior or longstanding non-elected officials within government (e.g. top civil servants);
Selected individuals with effective control of key commercial, military and/or criminal groups in:
The "defence" and "counter-terrorism" industries;
The financial sector;
Corporate media

The Rise Of America's Secret Government

When and how did the "secret government" arise in the US? It could easily be traced to the creation of the CIA after World War II. Special guest David Talbot joins the Liberty Report to discuss his new book, The Devil's Chessboard, about Allen Dulles and the deep state.

David Talbot is an American liberal journalist, author and media executive. He is the founder, former CEO and editor-in-chief of an early web magazine, Salon. Talbot founded Salon in 1995. The magazine gained a large following and broke several major national stories. It was described by Entertainment Weekly as one of the Net's "few genuine must-reads".

Since leaving Salon, Talbot has researched and written on the Kennedy assassination and other areas of what he calls "hidden history." Talbot has worked as a senior editor for Mother Jones magazine and a features editor for The San Francisco Examiner, and has written for Time magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and other publications.

That there is a 'deep state' is a correct statement. They are the men and women who despite whatever party is in power, no matter what this or that pundit or news outlet says, continue to keep our government functioning and serving we, the people. They are to be applauded for soldiering on and doing their assigned jobs quietly and professionally.
