I think that ever since 1848, Germany has not been too keen on Slavs. And during WWII they took that non-keen-ness to I guess unprecedented levels, so I don't think that Slavs were included in their "Aryan" umbrella group.

Besides, (German) nationalism was spurred by liberals against the conservative aristocracy. The whole idea of the Revolutions of 1848 was peoples coming together to usurp their masters.

Nazi animosity towards Slavs has to do with a centuries-old conflict between Eastern and Western Europe. Western Europe (i.e. Protestant/Catholic Europe) viewed Eastern (Orthodox) Europe as "backwards", while the East viewed the West as "decadent", as moral standards were much stricter in the East than in the West, while the West was generally more developed, artistically, intellectually, and so on. Whenever the two interacted with each other, the results were usually bloody. Most people know about Vlad Dracula's impalings; few know who those impaled were. Dracula would order merchants to be given one extra gold coin as change for their purchases. If they did not return the coin, they, mostly Western Europeans, would be impaled.

It has more to do with the antagonistic relations between ethno-religious groups in the area than it has to do with Germany and German sense of nationality post-1871 in a recognized state. National Socialism was decisively and effectively palingenetic, and as such, did an exemplary job in capturing the spirit of the Teutonic era and the attitude of the Teutonic Order with all its implications in a modernized Europe.

Anyway, I have never maintained any anti-Slavic positions (with the exception of my attitude toward the Polish and Russian Slavs who remain on occupied German soil), but from the stories of my family and the education they received, this goes back to far beyond even the Revolutions of 1848, at least to the Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic War. The crippling defeat we inflicted on the marauding Russian forces at the Battle of Tannenberg in Ostpreußen during the Great War was final and irresistable revenge for Grünfelde, 1410.

I was making specific reference to an old defeat not simply at the hands of Balts, but of a large Polish force at Grünfelde (Grunwald), which remained in the German collective consciousness at least through the Great War and had been remarked upon following the 1914 defeat of the Russian Army at Tannenberg.
