"Deterrent" ...? Surely there must be millions of people who have not committed a crime because they are deterred or guided towards better behaviour by virtue of the threat of going to prison. The fact is we do not know who they are because they have not committed an offence to go on record.
I have personally known Psychologists with BAs MAs PhD who have classified a criminal as "Dangerous, risk, psychopath" only for the prisoners to be released on appeal as totally innocent and all their years of shouting their innocence (many with no previous record) being ignored because a so-called "expert" - "specialist" labelled the person a psychopath.
