A new quarter released on Monday celebrates a legendary figure who spent her life advocating for Indigenous people.

Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, is the third woman to be honored as part of the US Mint's "American Women Quarters Program."

The "tails" side of the coin depicts Mankiller in a traditional shawl looking to the future, with the seven-point star of the Cherokee Nation at her side. The "heads" side still depicts George Washington -- but in a portrait designed by the late sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser.

At an event commemorating the release of the quarter on Monday, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. spoke about the legacy of the tribe's former leader.

"Even years after her passing, Chief Mankiller is still making an impact," he said.

Well, you have to consider that African Americans do not hold near the wealth of white Americans. This means they live in more impoverished areas. Poverty is a big contributor to crimes such as murders. It is also a big contributor to gun crime. Given the wealth and income gap between African Americans and whites, it also means they are less likely to have access to mental health resources.

Add to that, lax gun laws and these contributing factors of poverty, little to no access to mental health, and it would only make sense that African Americans would probably commit most of the murders.

But it's not because they are "inferior" or black that is the reason they commit most of the gun crimes. It's because of the contributing factors of poverty (which whites are less likely to live in), lack of access to mental health (which whites are far more likely to be able to get access to), and easy access to guns. All these factors affect African Americans far more so than whites.

@Scamp Blacks actually don't commit as much crime as portrayed by the news. We discussed this in criminal justice back when I was Pre-Law. White males are more aggressive.

The Bureau of Census' Current Population Reports (1995) was an important source of data for the key classification variable. A parallel source of data was available on victims of aggressive crime through the National Criminal Victimization Survey. Findings show that blacks were over-represented among offenders in each category of aggressive crime. Whites and "others" were underrepresented among offenders. Blacks were at highly increased risk, relative to their representation in the Nation's population, for victimization in homicide and at some disadvantage (although not at a level appropriately denominated as risk in a statistical sense) for victimization in both sexual and aggravated assault. That is just one study that studied aggression among black and white men. I copied the abstract.

There's a clear bias against blacks because who is writing the narrative, white men of course, the majority. So of course the white men will downplay their aggression and criminal incidents.

I have to agree with you. As a white guy, I think we do tend to be more aggressive. When I watch other white guys, I do see them act more aggressively by and large. You don't really hear about African American mass shooters either.

Blacks are approximately 12.8% of the US population. Black males are half that say 6%. Black males between the age of 16 and 50 are maybe 3 or 4%.
So we have a 3-4% demographic minority committing over half the Murders and violent crime and gun crimes.

Exposure to airborne lead has been shown to lead to higher homicide rates.

But since you think there is no science, look up a study called “The relationship between lead exposure and homicide” by PB Stretesky and MJ Lynch that came out in 2001.
