Sure Population II systems may be too metal deficient for life. Still, in theory all it may take is a planet mere centuries older to have a spacefaring civilization.

Also not all areas in a galaxy are suitable for the development of life (as we know). Just like the 'goldilocks zone' in a star system, galaxies also have regions that are likely more habitable than other regions.


Right, the peripheral areas may be too metal poor, and galactic centers may be too crowded--close passing stars may disrupt planetary orbits. I'm not at all sure about latter though.

So, assuming that life easily occurs in the universe, the universe may not be old enough for many cases of intelligent life to occur, and in those cases where intelligent life did occur, the chances that its civilisation becomes space-faring may have been very slim.


I think by now there are a number of space farers in our galaxy, and we can join the club.
