It seems the media failed to notice the recent cooling trend of the last two years. What could be the problem? Maybe the sun is burning out and we're all going to freeze to death and die unless we change our ways.

The article fails to make mention of the global moving average of temperatures over the last few decades. A 2 year drop because of sun activity doesn't really tell us much.

Well, that's one way to oversimplify. CO2 concentration is a single number, and very easy to measure. Solar activity is not, and neither is global temperature. We can construct indexes, but we don't actually have a definite number. That's one thing that makes it easier for AGW screamers to pretend solar activity is irrelevant.

From the article cited in the OP:

None of this argues against global warming. The 1950s was the last decade cooler than the previous decade, the next five decades were all warmer on average than the decade before. Two year cooling cycles, even if they set records, are statistical noise compared to the long-term trend. Moreover, the case for global warming does not rely primarily on observed warming; it has models, historical studies and other science behind it.

Not to say it's not a potential problem, but there's a lot of uncertainty about climate sensitivity. It's not well understood how much change will occur with a given amount forcing. If the system has a low sensitivity a doubling of a trace greenhouse gas might not be a problem.
