I just couldn't see more than a specialist use for such a weapon set up; any machine pistol would work as well and have the advantage of auto as well as semi auto fire. The Glock set up is maybe 6" shorter overall. I could see a use with the G18, 3 round selective fire, more accuracy in a smaller package

No auto - civilians abound. They use GLOCK 17 and 19, as far as I know, and it's just easier and more instinctive this way, absorbs recoil better, etc.

It's also very cheap - just a regular GLOCK, of which there are many, with a plastic stock attached. :)

Personally the Franchi Spas12, always liked it, easy to handle and choice of pump or semi-auto

Anything from France is instant fail.

And I suspect that very few dogs could survive having their skulls smashed against the nearest hard surface. The only reason why I'd lose a fight to a dog is because I wouldn't want to hurt the dog.

Dogs are very effective alarm systems, though.

Layered defense is always best:

1) Electronic alarm system. The type that alerts an outside company is best, but if one can't afford the monthly cost, one that will phone your own cell phone and also make lots of noise is better than not having one at all

2) Two dogs inside the home. Two 50 pound dogs beat a single 100 lb dog. They make twice the noise, keep each other company (dogs are pack animals; they need the social company when you're not home), and they embolden each other. Standard poodles, standard or giant schnauzers, and several other breeds are plenty large enough (without being too big), and they don't shed (which makes them perfect for living inside the home with you).

3) A handgun in a lockbox (which are designed to keep the piece out of the hands of children, but allow quick access). A revolver is best because there is no magazine spring which weakens over time when fully loaded. A reloader or two can fit in the lockbox with the gun.

4) Finally, a pump action or semi automatic shotgun with a bandolier of 00 or 000 buckshot locked to a rack in the closet for the real serious stuff

5) A cell phone at your bedside. Cell phone lines can't be cut.

6) If you have an alarm on your car, keep the remote at your bedside. You can set off the alarm with it to make even more noise.

1. Nerve gas.
2. Wait.
3. Profits!

I had a friend with 2 trained rottweilers who came back from a trip to find only the dogs had been stolen. I suppose that is a success?

For the former owner, yes.

No way. Grenades are downright dangerous. Heavy, too. I just can't throw those fucking things far enough, and I was an outfielder when young.

Now, directional mines (like Claymores) are the cat's meow for the yard (depending on the location/distance of your neighbors). In a place like mine, neighbors can't be seen. A couple of Claymores can clear the yard/driveway before they even get to the front door.

I know, and your advice sounds very useful. Still, the reason the grenades suggestion sounds ridiculous is because he is and he knew that very well when he said that.

I know. Grenades really make a mess of living rooms (and everything else in the area).

His reasoning makes sense. A revolver has less moving parts and isn't spring-loaded, which would make it less likely to fail at a critical moment.

revolver is best

Fail.

If knowingly walking into a gunfight with a handgun, a highly dependable semi-automatic is clearly superior to a revolver.

But anybody with any sense at all won't knowingly walk into a gunfight (police and military exempted from that general statement).

When needing a quick access defensive weapon at the bedside, the revolver suffers no spring fatigue in the magazine over long, long periods of time being loaded and not used. It is the ultimate in dependability under such circumstances, and if the homeowner utilizes strict fire control (which he/she should do under such residential circumstances), the revolver will likely provide plenty of firepower to send the invaders packing (especially if alarms are sounding, and significant others are on the cell phone with police), especially with just one reloader in possession.

How often does a SIG Sauer or Glock fail due to spring fatigue? Were our boys in Korea and Vietnam coming back bitching about how unreliable the Colt M1911A1 was? No? Then you can take your revolvers and shove them up your cowboy arse.

Anyway... THIS is, by far, the most practical weapon for home defense:
