Corsair looks.
P-80
It came out to late for WW2, had the usual bugs to work out and was a generation or 2 behind Korea so its potential career as a fighter was never really seen. However, I find it quite impressive from an Engineering POV.
From initial design to test flight was less then 5 months. Previously, Little development in the USA was done on jets, yet with some British info, effort and intrest, the USA had produced some intresting designs, leading to the p-80. There is also an intresting bit of Lockheed history, where they were researching various jet engine and jet craft designs on paper since 1939, but no one wanted to fund development. Had they.. who knows what the USA would have flown.
Panavia Tornado not a conventional fighter, and it doesnt look that good either, but I like it for some odd reason.
As for comments made earlier..
P51 and bomber escort:
p51 got alot of press because they got alot of kills and effectively supported the bombers. However, the reasons for this is not mainly because of its performance, but because of changing tactics. Early in the war bomber escorts were ordered to stay close to the bombers - this allowed German fighters to strafe and run, which limited opertunities for escort to get kills while making it easy for germans to get kills.
After a while, a new tactic was adopted: bomber escorts were allowed to detach and confront opposition, to track them down, duke it out, go hunting for enemy aircraft, etc.
This effectively wipied out German air born resistance to bombers, not the improved perfermance of the p51d over the other escorts.
Avro arrow:
Yes, it was an overpriced, overhyped, buggy POS.
.. As were the Voodoos we got to replace them.
