Tribune.com -- The U.S. Army has been testing a robot armed with a pump-action shotgun for counter-insurgency missions. The unit has already seen action in Iraq.

Apparently the US is already testing and using combat robots on the battlefield ...

As I understand it the PackBot is a pre-cursor to the AssaultBot (aka ED-209) ... here one can be seen patrolling a gov't installation.

Seriously though ... the PackBot stuff is real.
