I just read for one of my classes, that when France surrendered to Germany in June 1940, French troops that had been evacuated to Britain from Dunkirk where allowed to return home to France if they wished.

It made me wonder, how did these troops get home? Did the allies and the Germans negotiate a deal where allied ships would be allowed to sail freely back to French ports with the troops? Did neutral countries ships transport them?

I have not been able to find any information in my books or on the net :-(

I do not know myself, but I would imagine Vichy French ships would have been allowed to enter British ports early in the war.

As a guess, but without any real knowledge, maybe through Spain or Portugal.

That would also be a possibility, but there would still have to be some sort of agreement between the allies and Germany that the ships would not be attacked, and would not carry anything else etc.

I doubt the British would just allow useful Vichy French ships to leave Britain and sail home, unless they where somehow sure they would get the ships back.
