One of the reasons for WW I might be the German expansion and the entry on the era of colonialism. But in the World War the "Schutzgebiete" played only a minor part. So the armed forces for Africa were only about some thausands, mostly Askarian warriors from Africa. Nevertheless the German Commander Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck was successful in defeating the superior British and Union Defence Forces while using guerilla tactics.
Consequently you have to call Lettow-Vorbeck one of the most brilliant tactical Commanders. Does he deserve this title?

Yes. The same is true for Skorzeny in WWII. His rescue of Mussolini, for example, was awesome.
