Well he did compromise a lot during the long parliament even capitulating to various attempts by parliamentarians to have his supporters executed on trumped up charges. He also gave up the ability to dissolve parliament. But I guess bungling was more the feature of Charles I reign rather than softness. For what it is worth his supporter Archbishop Laud said this of him "a mild and gracious prince, who knew not how to be, or to be made, great."
The solution to 1984 is 1973!

They gave him lots of opportunities to compromise and run a constitutional monarchy and they only chopped his head off when he refused multiple times and kept running to Scots for troops to keel the war going. Cromwell didn't even start out as a Republican and had a guy imprisoned at the beginning of the war for the crime of making republican statements.
