Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November!
Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot!
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot!

As is known, conspirators, including, most famously, Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up King and Parliament in 1605 in an effort to put a more Catholic-friendly monarch on the throne (ie. James' daughter, Princess Elizabeth).

Now, the question is, how much impact did the Plot have on the King's and Parliament's policies toward the Catholics and religious freedom in general? I've heard from some sources that James was sympathetic and was willing to give the Catholics, at the very least, permission to practice in public. Other sources state that James, from the get-go, was not going to give an inch to the Catholics and would continue the policies of his predecessor, Elizabeth I.

Discuss.

Bonus discussion: what might have happened had the Plotters succeeded and managed to blow up both King and Parliament?[/i]
