OTTAWA - Former Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark reiterated his reluctant support for Paul Martin over Stephen Harper Monday, saying the prime minister is the lesser of two evils to lead the country.

"I do think it would be dangerous to have a leader with the kind of mentality Mr. Harper has," Clark said in a media scrum at Parliament Hill Monday.

Now some outside of Canada might not grasp the significance of what Clark said but basically he's endorsing a Liberal over the leader of his own party.

Clark leads a 'red tory' faction, a shrinking group that has been largely eclipsed by the more conservative ex-Reform/Alliance party. Clark was PM for 6 months in 1979-1980 and he's a sore loser over the fact that his party abandoned him and joined up with the Alliance. He's basically spent the last few months since the merger bitching about it and trying to sabotage the new party.

On Sunday he went on national TV and told viewers that they should vote for Martin, who is up to his neck in corruption, over the leader of his own party. He went on to endorse Ed Broadbent who should have just stayed out of politics when he retired 15 years ago. Broadbent is a former leader and candidate for the NDP, the most left-wing party that can actually get a seat in Parliament.

Luckily for us he and his ilk are just a tiny minority in what is shaping up to be a strong new party.
