It seems to me that the words Liberal and Conservatism take on different meaning in different countris, and they sort of slide back and forth on the Left/Right scale regarding what the "center" is in that country.

In America, a conservative is simply a person who lives by the principles of Limited Government, fidelity to the original intent of the Constitution, and basic Judeo-Christian values, or traditional western values.

Is there any American here who things this is not accurate.

How can we therefore compare our conservatism with that of someone from another country.

Good point. The answer is, of course, that you can’t. A ‘conservative’ in Saudi Arabia believes some radically different things from a conservative in, say, Wichita. So much so that they’re not even on the same spectrum. This is because, fundamentally, there is no universal conservative ideology. Conservatism is relative to a given cultural and social milieu, and has no meaning outside that context. This is not surprising - after all, conservatism is, almost by definition, motivated by the desire to conserve one’s particular cultural and social milieu, regardless of what that milieu happens to be. All of this, of course, goes back to Edmund Burke, who essentially founded modern conservatism….
