Elon Musk profited from the early dot.com bubble, capitalized on e-commerce and then entered the technology game by virtue of government subsidies. Why he's described as an 'inventor' is beyond me. It's doubtful that he truly designs these cars, as is mentioned here.

He styles himself as a Tony Stark type character, but in reality he's mostly a savvy pre-Silicon Valley businessman who survived the dot.com collapse. The statements of Noam Chomsky about the marriage between tech companies and government subsidies come to mind when he's talking about colonizing Mars. The government will be picking up the tap or has already done so by financing the initial research/tech and then handing it to private companies (those connected in the research) for free.

I'm also pretty dubious of Musk. If he can get us onto Mars, great. But his products always seem to be just around the corner.
