There's much discussion lately about cultural appropriation (or misappropriation). As near as I can understand this current usage, this means a dominant group adapting aspects of the culture of a disadvantaged group in a way that harms, or at least disrespects, the latter group.
Putting aside cases involving cultural aspects held to be sacred, what objective research has there been on the harm such appropriation of aspects of popular culture has inflicted on the group being appropriated from, either in concrete ways and/or as perceived by members of the latter group, perhaps as disrespect?
Ideally, you'd want to exclude people who have a particular vested interest in the issue and to avoid prompting people to express concern about things that hadn't already concerned them.
In any case, where would you find the objective studies on that?
