You have written before that one of the achievements of the Soviet Union was that they were able to unite 'disparate republics into a single, equal people'. As far as I know, the USSR did not undertake mass migration, so their situation was different from ours, but how did they deal with the existence of disparate peoples and cultures within their state, and in your view, is there anything that we can learn from them that might be applicable to our situation?

The SU had mixed policies, she supported national determination for its people but heavily regulated how that nationalism was to be expressed and also her national Soviet republics were destructive as they tore Russia apart and severely reduced her core territory as they all chipped away from Russia proper to form especially the Ukraine for example, the SU stands as an example to avoid unless you want to go her or Yugoslavia's way, with extremely liberal social policies which gave every nation, its own institutions to solidify those entities without a prior ethnogenesis taking place by these nations struggling for these institutions and gaining them in battle(which means you end up with a series of fake nations), instead of assimilating them. The Albanians were given as a present their own national chamber in the Serbian parliament without actually fighting for it or going through struggle but merely because when the Croatians were dominant they reduced Serbian political power to cripple her.

Serbia went from 80% Serbian to 60% Serbian while during the same time Greece from 80% Greek to 99% Greek.

SU worked on submission principles towards its ethnic groups who were conquered previously by the Russian Empire. SU was just an empire at the end of the day. The difference is between the Empire and Soviets, is that the Soviets had policies of assimilation. Aka the "Soviet Man" which was nothing but Russofication at the end of the day if you look at it. Monarchy in the Empire did sometimes encourage assimilation (like it tried with the Jews in the Pale Settlements or successfully did with Tatar nobility), but in the end it was more interested in colonization then assimilation.

The Soviet man like the Yugoslavia people's man were total failures that were doomed to fail from the start because neither of these 2 men had common institutions with the other "constituent nations", each constituent nation had its own parliament, own police and so on, they could never form into one man, neither into a Yugoslavian man or a Soviet man, they were coerced to pretend they are and once they could no longer be coerced they fell apart and went their separate ways, the problem is they took away territories that were not theirs to begin with and Soviet ethno-genesis in these 'constituent nations' was hurried to make new nations and new men.

These policies are the exact opposite of assimilation bur rather institutional segregation, the Czar had such policies, not the Soviets.

noemon wrote:Similar to the ones I mentioned, like national parades, dancing lessons at school of the traditional dances of the ethnos, a state subtly oiled to work better for co-nationals and co-religious people, and there are more I am forgetting right now. All there to pro-actively push foreigners to choose between their own identity and the host national identity as well as reinforce national identity into their own which then become missionaries of that identity working as peer-pressure towards foreigners at schools and so on and forth. This kind of policy works against multi-culti by making it harder for foreign people to form enclaves.
This subject is one of the most pressing subjects concerning governments in Europe right now but I see no discussion about it neither here nor outside of PoFo, despite my attempts to bring it up in here. It's alike nobody wants to talk about it.
This is all nationalism, the very definition of it.
