Official Title: Psychosocial Similarities and Differences between Modern Trophy Wife/Girlfriend, Modern Wife/Girlfriend, Modern Escort, and Pre-Modern Wife
Definitions
Modern trophy wife/girlfriend – A type of a woman who, out of her own free will and desire, carried on a romantic/sexual relationship with a man primarily for its material benefits to her (and status and sexual satisfaction benefits to him) in Western countries (i.e. urban settlements in Europe and North America) in the late 20th/early 21st centuries.

Modern wife/girlfriend – Standard (i.e. most common) wife/girlfriend of a man in Western countries in the late 20th/early 21st centuries. Such women got married or carried not legally defined (but perfectly legal and ethical for that era) romantic/sexual relationships with men, exclusively out of their own free will and desire, primarily out of romantic need (in general) and romantic interest in/love of their husband/boyfriend (in particular).

Modern escort – A high-end (i.e. expensive and sophisticated) prostitute in Western countries in the late 20th/early 21st centuries: Escorts of that part of the world, during that era, were women who willingly engaged in prostitution for the sake of high income. In other words, they did not do it out of absence of any other employment opportunities (there were plenty, which however did not pay as much, but were sufficient to make a decent living); or because they’ve been forced to do it; or out of any psychological problems (e.g. drug addiction – many cheap/unsophisticated prostitutes in the same counties during that era were allegedly drug addicts who traded sex for ‘quick’ cash in order to quickly get a needed dose of drugs).

Pre-modern wife – Standard (i.e. most common) wife of a man in Western countries up to until roughly the end of the 19th century. In other words, a daughter who was married off (with little, if any, input from her) by her parents, to a son of another family (mainly in order to create an alliance between the two families and provide them with heirs), and viewed/accepted her position (as a wife) as an important/necessary/desired life-long occupation/‘career’.

Proposed Psychosocial Characteristics of Each
Modern trophy wife/girlfriend:

    1. High valuation of her personal respectability and health.

    2. High valuation of the wealth of a potential husband/boyfriend.

    3. Low valuation of specific personality and physical appearance in a potential husband/boyfriend, and possibly in people more generally.

    4. Low needs for attachment and intimacy (both of which form the roots of romantic love: a psychological need to love and be loved); or, conversely, an ability to experience high levels of attachment and intimacy with any man.

    5. Low sexual autonomy (i.e. little aversion to having sex with any man, whenever and wherever he chooses); or, conversely, low sexual inhibitions and high sex drive, combined with no clear ‘attractive type’ (i.e. attracted to men with all sorts of physical appearances and demeanors). The latter may lead to a high tendency for adultery/cheating.

Modern wife/girlfriend (summary: more or less the exact opposite of the modern trophy wife/girlfriend):

    1. High valuation of her personal respectability and health.

    2. Low valuation of the wealth of a potential husband/boyfriend.

    3. High valuation of specific personality and physical appearance in a potential husband/boyfriend, and in people more generally.

    4. High needs for attachment and intimacy, and an inability to experience attachment or intimacy with most men.
Note: Some scholars, in Western countries in the late 20th/early 21st centuries, believed that nearly anyone (even their Western contemporaries) could experience high levels of attachment and intimacy with any member of the opposite sex (or same sex, if they are homosexual), provided they cohabit with that individual, as spouses, for a sufficiently long period of time. Thus, according to this perspective romantic love can develop between people who initially lack any romantic interest in each other.

    5. High sexual autonomy (i.e. strong aversion to having sex with any man, especially when the choice of time and venue is up to him); as well as high sexual inhibitions and/or low sex drive combined with a clear ‘attractive type’ (i.e. attracted to men with only particular physical appearance and demeanors).
Note: In Western countries, in the late 20th/early 21st centuries, most people’s level of sexual autonomy was exceptionally high, and evidently stemmed from psychological internalization of relevant traditional democratic values (i.e. individual freedom and independence) into individual psychosexual traits. It is likely no coincidence that the influence of traditional democratic values on various aspects of Western society (especially those which were traditionally viewed as being outside the political sphere in which democratic values could be applied) has been steadily expanding and increasing since the 18th century, and reached unprecedented levels of influence on all aspects of Western society in the late 20th/early 21st centuries.

Modern escort (summary: similar to the modern trophy wife/girlfriend, in some respects, and to the modern wife/girlfriend, in other respects):

    1. Low valuation of her personal respectability and health.

    2. High valuation of her personal wealth; but low valuation of the wealth of a potential husband/boyfriend.

    3. High valuation of specific personality and physical appearance in a potential husband/boyfriend, but not in people more generally.

    4. High needs for attachment and intimacy, and an inability to experience attachment or intimacy with most men.

    5. Low sexual autonomy (i.e. little aversion to having sex with any man, whenever and wherever he chooses); or, conversely, low sexual inhibitions and high sex drive combined with no clear ‘attractive type’ (i.e. attracted to men with all sorts of looks and demeanors).

Pre-modern wife (summary: similar to the modern trophy wife/girlfriend, at least on the surface):

    1. High valuation of her personal respectability and health.

    2. High valuation of the wealth, prestige and power of a potential husband.
In contrast to the modern trophy wife/girlfriend, this high valuation of prestige and power (in addition to wealth) of a potential husband, by the pre-modern wife, was mainly due to the differences between modern (i.e. late 20th/early 21st centuries) and pre-modern (i.e. before 20th century) Western societies, rather than due to psychological differences between the pre-modern wife and modern trophy wife/girlfriend. In fact, prestige and power were more important, in pre-modern times, for being respected and favorably treated by all societal institutions and individuals; as well as for obtaining better opportunities for one’s children, members of one’s natal family, etc.

    3. Low valuation of specific personality and physical appearance in a potential husband, and possibly in people more generally.
However, the same is unlikely to be true when it came to the personality and/or physical appearance of an illegal lover (whenever the pre-modern wife engaged in adultery); given that an adulteress could not benefit from wealth, prestige or power of an illegal lower without making the relationship public (which usually led to serious criminal punishment, and always led to a loss of respectability and risk of being divorced by her husband).

    4. Low needs for attachment and intimacy; or, conversely, an ability to experience high levels of attachment and intimacy with any man.
Note: It is possible that, just like a modern wife/girlfriend, the pre-modern wife instead had high needs for attachment and intimacy, and could not experience attachment or intimacy with most men. (This would explain a seemingly high incidence of adultery in pre-modern times, despite adultery being a punishable offence). However, these needs did not enter into her evaluation of a potential husband (anymore than they entered into evaluation of a potential work supervisor/co-workers for job seekers in Western countries in the late 20th/early 21st centuries).

    5. Low sexual autonomy (i.e. little aversion to having sex with any man, whenever and wherever he chooses).
