What is the demographic overlap between academic major/discipline and political orientation?
Is there much truth to the sense that humanities majors are liberals if not more left-wing whilst practical hard science majors like engineers are conservatives?
If so, what sort of relationship is there between the views and values underpinning a person's politics and their academic pursuit?

I like your example but it shocked me as its my impression that people think hard scientists as conservative and humanities as lefties.
Perhaps you point to a nuance about how stereotypical right or left wing views and values might not be as simple
