It's '666' in the Judaeo-Christian ethos. God only know what drug-fueled mania inspired the Book of Revelations. However, the religious instruction i was given was that 7 is the Biblical representation of the perfect number. 6 is associated with imperfection (perfection minus one). The three sixes is a rhetorical device designed to emphasize the idea of imperfection - so The Beast is the ultimate embodiment of imperfection, so to speak.

Perhaps it is to worship and embrace such imperfection for whatever reason?

Number 7 does represent the perfect number for some reason.
Its not only in Christianity of Judaism but even in Islam and Zoroastrianism.

There is an ancient Jewish tradition called Gematria, in which each letter of the Hebrew alphabet represents a number, and words or phrases that add up to the same number are said to have some special correspondence. The author of Revelations was writing in Greek, not Hebrew, but apparently this kind of code could be transcribed to other alphabets. And some scholars figured out that "666" equals "Nero Caesar."
