A 12-year-old daughter of migrant Roma workers in England is raising the bar on human intelligence, much to the delight of her family and community.

As the Western Daily Press reports, pre-teen Nicole Barr of Essex aced her IQ test with a perfect score of 162.

Essex’s score surpasses the wits of noted geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking and places her among the top 1% of the population. According to NY Daily News, the average IQ score for adults is 100, and anything higher 140 is considered genius level.

Nicole told the Western Daily: “When I found out I got such a high score, it was so unexpected. I was so shocked.”

Essex took the Mensa IQ test with her father James Barr, 36, who intuitively felt she’d be accepted into the illustrious society for intellects who score in the 98th percentile.

The pre-teen lives in a Gypsy caravan with her father and baby half-sister. Her proud father said her academic achievement has been the talk of community, also known as Roma.

Nicole has always been more academically mature than her fellow peers. Even in elementary school, she could calculate complex algebra before she was 10.

Presently, Essex attends Burnt Mill Academy in Harlow where she acts in school plays and hopes to be a doctor one day.

Only children are able to score higher than 161 because that is the maximum IQ score for an adult. “The test is age-dated for children,” she said.

Unsurprisingly, child geniuses are academically mature for their age, are well-versed in a particular subject, have an incredible memory and prefer spending time with older people.

With the ability to access unlimited information at one’s whim, no doubt many more children and teens will be deemed geniuses before the century is over.

She will probably pregnant by 13.

Harsh.

I don't even see why this is a news story. Genius is not usually born to genius. Genius comes from average parents. For this to be news, they must be ignorant of where genius comes from. This is not an anomaly.

IQ is actually highly predictive of success in a wide variety of areas. The actual Mensa test, which it appears she took, is a very good one. One way to think of IQ is that it is the speed of your processor. (Simple but useful way of thinking about it anyway.)

Well yes....And knives are sharp. Actually this little girl's IQ appears in about 1:30,000 people. If she can learn to dial it down and have good social skills it will be an amazing asset. She must also keep in mind (pardon) that these days the ability to rapidly process stuff in your memory banks is a bit less important than it once was. The almost unlimited access to data that everyone has at hand diminishes a bit the importance of an ability once requiring a very high IQ to accomplish. That is to process data quickly. Nevertheless, it is an asset she can certainly rely upon.

Also. Mensa does not consider 140 "genius level". Genius is something quite difference. Brilliant is a word passed around occasionally. The motto of Mensa USA is "Where Brilliance Belongs". (The unofficial motto is: "We get your jokes.")

I did a thread about Mensa not to long ago. I recommend that everyone attend a meeting whether or not they aspire to join. It is interesting to say the least. I have never heard or even heard of a speaker at a meeting who just about anyone would not understand. They do tend to have to field some pretty good questions and feel they can move right along in their presentation. The only caution might be that game night is something to see. Don't bet real money. There is a Mensa dating service which is surprisingly busy. One more thing. If you want to see something really staggering, go to their site and look at the help wanted ads. It would make Sheldon Cooper blush.

For the purpose of this thread it is fair to say that she is no less remarkable compared to blacks than she is to Asians.

The issue of high IQ's, particularly those 140 or higher, is that there exists along with them the high likelihood of social problems. If her Gypsy lifestyle keeps her away from the sort of schooling that would challenge her she will become very unhappy early on.

Back in the days early identification of exceptional potential through early standardized testing, and AP classes it was not unusual for exceptionally bright children to fail in school. Combine lockstep learning and the desire to go much faster and you have the recipe for failure.

The person writing this does not understand what an IQ test measures. He/she is confusing an IQ test with Jeopardy.
