If you've been biting your fingernails down to the quick wondering when the final season of Game of Thrones will come out, no doubt you'll be delighted by this.

HBO has officially announced that the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will air in 2019 in a short statement today. The only downside is that that's a whole year away.

While we now have a rough idea as to when the remaining six episodes of the show will be shown, HBO declined to reveal when the specific premiere date will be, focusing instead on people involved with the project.

The final episode is expected to stretch out for more than eight months, with many of the episodes being supersized. Production on Season 8 started in October and will reportedly last until August 2018 - a full year after Season 7's finale will be shown.

"Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take," HBO programming president Casey Bloys said over the summer about the long wait between seasons.

"The shooting is complicated enough - on different continents, with all the technical aspects - and the special effects are a whole other production period that we're trying to figure out. That is a big factor in all of this."

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, David Nutter, and Miguel Sapochnik will be directors for GoT season 8. The writers will be Benioff and Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill. All the prequel series planned for GoT remain under development.

Completely overrated series. At least it indirectly inspired 'Vikings', but otherwise? And at this point everyone pretty much knows that HBO paid off George R.R. Martin in order to delay his books, so that the ending wouldn't be spoiled. You can literally read on his wiki page that he even found the time to edit another author's work.

I thought the last season was significantly lower quality. They strung out the story in the first five series and now are spoiling it by rushing to a final conclusion. I'm not impressed.

They originally tuned in to see a foul-mouthed and erudite dwarf sleep around with hot girls and get into trouble. The bloodshed, sinister plotting and gratuitous nudity were added plusses. But when was the last time the audience was treated to a fun Tyrion? Now all he does is play handmaiden to Queen Albino. People will still watch the conclusion, but the show has since turned into something else.
